I turned down the job.....but now .....

The COO left me a VM because he wants to negotiate something with me. Although I am extremely flattered that he would call, I have always been eh about the job. It’s the same thing I do now which is cool because I now exactly what I am getting into, but….eh. What should I do? What should I say when I call him back? Personally, I don't believe I am all the hustle and fuss over.

I think I read your other thread about this. Honestly, in NYC, a few thousand raise isn't a whole lot, especially after taxes. I got a $5000 raise and it's only $100 more in each paycheck. Unless it's something really stellar and amazing for your career, I personally wouldn't make the jump. The only reason I would make a move for the same position is if my current position and working environment was completely unbearable. I also am one of those people who believes that with every job, you should be advancing, if only a little.

That's why I turned it down. It wasn't going to be that much of a difference. The new position does have more responsibilities than I have now, though. My whole reasoning was that if I was going to be doing more work in pretty much the same job I needed to make the equivalent in pay or at least somewhat close.



Sometimes I just feel stunted at my job. I was discussing this the other day with a co-worker and she said she called it the ‘golden cage’. The ‘golden cage’ because you are allowed to do a lot of things in this job, i.e., come to work in jeans, given a ‘time slot’ (from 9-9:30) to start in the morning, work from home one day a week (although I am not), work from home for longer periods of time in emergencies, etc. Although we are given all these perks there is no real room for improvement. The only step with this company is moving lateral to other departments. There are only a few ‘high’ positions and the people who have them have been here probably since inception. Within my department I feel like such an outcast. It’s like I form my own little department. I often feel ousted by my boss and other co-workers because they are in a constant ‘team’ attitude but only with each other. There are certain times when I am let in the circle but those are fleeting moments and I have brought it up with her but it goes back and forth.

Update: I spoke with the COO and he put up a good offer. I calculated the money and it seems like a good fit for the time being. Although, I must say, I am EXTREMELY nervous. Accepting this offer will mean being the newbie, having a million people look at me, and trying to settle into a new environment.....oh yeah and pray to god I don't get fired in a few weeks.

Well good luck! That was me before I left my last position. Change is hard. But it can also be worth it. Take that leap if you think it's going to be good for your career!
