The new job offer seemed too good to pass up, so I took it. Now, when do I give in my letter. I haven't received an official start date from the other company and don't want to tell my boss anything until they do. Also, the big boss who I wanted to give my letter to isn't here today. Do I give it to the next big boss? Should I wait until I get the 'official' date?

I'd try to wait on a start date for the next job.

do NOT give any sort of notice, verbal or written until you have your offer from the new job IN WRITING, preferably with a start date. then, and ONLY THEN, should you submit notice to the current employer!
p.s. CONGRATS. :)

Ha. Thanks. Written offer, then letter to boss, gotcha.

Agreed 110%. The deal ain't sealed until it's in writing. Also make sure there aren't any "pre-employment" requirements you need to meet but can't, or things you weren't clear on. I've had this come up sometimes with people I've wanted to hire. For example, in order to hire someone where I work, they need to have no criminal background whatsoever. We send them to get a background check done and it takes about 10 business days. I've lost count of the # of people who've told me they had no criminal background, yet a whole bunch of stuff pops up from "when they were younger and 18 and stupid". I've also had people who told me during the interview that they could work the hours I requested. Once hired, they change their hours and expect me to produce work for them. Doesn't work that way. I do have a unique setting that I work at, but stuff like this does come up probably across the board.

The only offer in writing I got was my first post-college job, at a university. My other two jobs, no writing...but that's probably because they are really small companies. I'm sure if I asked for something in writing, it wouldn't have been a problem.

I took a huge risk and put in my notice without the official letter from my future employer. They didn't FedEx it and it was taking forever..plus, I wanted to get out ASAP and use some of the time for a much needed vacation.

Totally agree. Also once you find out the start date that will determine when to hand in the letter - such as if you want to take some vacation time between the jobs, etc.

Oh yeah! Good call. Remember for many jobs, you lose sick days and such so you could always take a long vacation THEN put in your resignation.

Around 3pm was my planned time to give in my letter, but so far no confirm from the HR person. Good call. I do think they have pre-employment screening. The company is a small place with only 32 employees.

What if I am making the biggest mistake of my life? What if everything goes wrong? What if I hate the other place?

Then you'll suck it up and find some other situation.

What if I am making the biggest mistake of my life?
then you will learn from it.
What if everything goes wrong?
you'll have to find a way to make it right.
and, again, you'll learn from it.
What if I hate the other place?
you can leave.
you can stick it out until you go back to school.
you can use the opportunity to suggest and possibly implement change.
you'll - you guessed it - learn from it.

relaaaaaaaaaaax. take deep breaths. drink a glass of water. go outside for a couple mins and get some fresh air if you need to. then walk into your boss' office with you head held high and give him/her the letter while telling him/her what it is. keep it simple and professional. you'll be fine.
you'll learn from this too. :)

Maybe I should do a shot.
So I met with my boss and I explained to her that I was offered a position and was going to take it and that my last day would be on the 22nd. I told her how sad it was for me to be going because I loved it there.......and then I started crying....i could not finish my sentences. I got so emotional. She said she was going to talk to her boss and see what he says and see if they could match what the other company was offering. After she spoke with him they agreed to match! So.....I am going to stay at my job. Although she said bc I got the raise now (which will be effective on monday) that I will not be getting the bonus. Now I am beginning to wonder if I got swindled. hmm.....so i'm trying to calculate things and like if i would've stayed at my job so....
normally the company before it got acquired gave huge raises...about 4 Gs extra plus the bonus.
after we got acquired the raises dropped to normal corporate 3.5 but to keep us happy (i guess....don't really know bc it was only my second bonus) they gave us bigger bonuses.
so.....seeing as it was now 3.5 i was expcting about 1-2Gs extra in pay plus the bonus....oh god....i have no idea. I love the place I work for besides all it's politics bc the people are awesome and so is the environment. phew....that's my update. ;): ;):

Wow that is quite a turn of events! That is great they like you so much that they offered to match just to keep you.
That stinks about crying. Quitting is so hard when you really like where you work and the people. But at least something good came out of it :)
