can I get away with not wearing a tie to interview?

I already have two jobs, but I'm interviewing for a third one next tuesday. It's for a professional healthcare position. I will of course wear a suit to the interview, but it's not the type of business job where professional attire is required (you wear scrubs to work). The last interview I went to I didn't wear a tie, and I got the job. I really don't like them and am not comfortable wearing one. Does it look bad not to wear one?

In my mind, wearing a suit without a tie looks more unprofessional than wearing a tie without a suit.

I'd err on the side of caution and wear the tie. It certainly won't hurt you, and could only make you look more professional.

Really? On dressy days at my office, all the guys wear ties. Not every day is a coat & tie day (thank goodness!) but office dress up always invovles a tie with my male coworkers. (And they're all at least 40, so maybe that's part of it?)

yes, exactly. i had a super [corporate] culture shock when i moved from west to east. i spent a lot of $ getting suits that in CA i probably would've only worn to conferences and/or church!

I don't own a jacket, let alone a suit, and it has occasionally been difficult to get by without these here on the Eastern Seaboard. In the West, people have no need or want of those kinds of frivolities and formalities. But here it's all about dressing up and being old-fashioned and stick-up-the-ass.

I think I'm going to have to get a jacket sooner rather than later. :P

I would never go to a job interview without a full suit on. Why give them any more reason to eliminate you?

i would never work for a company that was "shirt and tie/suit and tie" i usually just wear a golf shirt and slacks to an interview

Update: I did not wear the tie and I got the job. It's only part time (third job for me, they wanted me fulltime) and they hired me on the spot after the interview, so I think they were desperate for people. Not sure it was a valid case study on the necessity of wearing a tie.

Walmart and Target sell suits/jackets now so I think you can do this rather cheaply if you like.
