The last thread got me thinking, and I didn't want to direct the subject away from parents and toward my own issues, so I thought I'd start a new one.

Anyway...

I saw a few people posting about grad school and how one should be sure about it while he/she there.

Currently, I'm in grad school PT in the evenings. I originally applied because I thought I wanted to go on and get a PhD and teach. Academia seemed like a great place to work and a lifestyle I'd like, but getting back into it I think I'm changing my mind about the whole thing (I'm not fond of writing, for instance). So in that regard, I'm unsure. I'm also unsure about my current career trajectory.

My focus is media studies but the actual program name is, unfortunately, television and radio, and that's more specialized that I'd like. If I were to go on to get a PhD that wouldn't matter much, but if this is it for me then it may matter a good deal more.

However... I work in "the industry" full-time in a corporate capacity. My work pays for 50% of my education and scholarships have filled in some more, so I'm getting my education for dirt cheap and I'll be well in the black when/if I finish. I enjoy going to class and prior to starting school I was bored out of my mind. I love learning, I like the challenge, and I like the social aspect since I don't get much social interaction at work (not with people my own age, anyway).

HOWEVER... there are some other things I want to do on the side, like volunteering and making websites, that I may not have so much time for with all the schoolwork I have to do. So I'm considering putting my grad school "on hold" until I know what the heck I'm doing.

But since it's cheap and I like it, should I just keep going? Does that make it a better investment, or not? Is it just going to be a "vanity degree?" Grr. Many thanks in advance.

If I had it being funded wholly or mostly, I wouldn't give a rat's ass if it was necessary or a vanity degree, I'd get it. But I am a huge nerd, love school, love academia as an environment, love being a student, love researching, writing, etc. If I was enjoying it and didn't have to shell out a lot personally for it, I'd stay in, were it me.
