Okay, so here's my story:

I was hired at the end of this August to work as an Admin. for my alma mater university. I started doing the lowest of the food chain tasks when it came to admin work. We have several levels of admins in my department (which I never understood because at the end of the day we are all someone's assistant anyway. I think it's only at different levels to differentiate pay grades and seniority). For example we have the position of Admin I, Admin II and Senior Admin. I am an Admin I.

When I first started I sat at our front desk answering phones, opening mail, making photo copies and doing whatever else my two bosses wanted me to do. My boss liked the job that I was doing and kept commenting that I learned quick. Well, about two months into my new job an Admin. II went on a leave of absence for one month. While she was gone my supervisor started noticing lots of decrepencies in the way that she did her job. As a result my boss made me clean out her office and had me move into that space and take over her job duties. I'm still an Admin. I., which is fine.

BUT... the Admin. II has returned to the office from her leave of absence. Thus, all hell has broken loose. She resents me now that I have her old job duties (we essentially switched roles). I can kinda understand what she may be feeling. She was there much longer than me and it really would suck to come back and find that your job has been taken over. I totally understand.

I digress, I am on to my point I promise...

So anyway, things between she and I have been super tense. I mean the tension can be cut with a knife. Usually I don't let little snotty comments or even the fact that she ignores me sometimes when I talk to her really get to me.

Usually.

However, something that really pisses me off about her is this:

1. Whenever a student comes to the office to see me she doesn't pick up the darn phone to let me know. Instead she sends me an email with high importance saying that the student is here to see me. While I check my email regularly I am not always looking at it enough for this type of communication to work. I feel that if I am physically in my office, than it is only right to call me and let me know. If I am out of the office, then leave me an email or a message saying someone came by to see me.

2.) She goes in my office without my permission. Just to leave my mail or paperwork on my desk or chair. We have inboxes in the back copy room, there should be no reason why she needs to come in my office. Especially when I'm not around.

I'm going to call these things to her attention, but I"m wondering what the best way to go about doing it is. I'm not one for engaging in confrontation, it makes me quite uncomfortable. I do need to let her know that these things bother me, though. Any suggestions?

it seems to me like you have two courses of action:

1. try and have a civil converation with her, make sure the focus of the conversation is about the work situation don't make it about her.

2. talk with your boss about the situation, docment specific instances with details (time date issue etc)......

ya never know..

It was your boss that switched your jobs, not you. I think it should be something the 3 of you meet together on, after you talk to your boss first. If not, you tell the boss, and let the boss take care of it.

I agree talk to your boss about it.
