i'm a marketing coordinator for an academic book publisher. i began working here almost two years ago, after a glorious internship at the feminist press where i thought i had finally figured out where i belonged. now, with two promotions since i started and another one most likely on the way within the next week, i find myself miserable.

i want to break into magazines. it seems most magazines don't hire without internship experience. all of my prior experience is in newspapers, new media, and books. i've tried finding an after-hours mag internship, but most places aren't interested (i don't have time for any other type of internship...i can't afford to leave my full time job, as i'm planning my wedding and the boy and i just purchased a condo). i take non-credit journalism courses. i attend media-related networking events. i pitch and submit with lots of positive feedback but almost no luck as far as paying assignments.

i feel that if i had more time to devote to this, i'd be able to make something happen. that's what frustrates me the most.

the boy says that, after we're married and i'm under his health insurance, i can switch to a part time job if i have enough freelance work lined up. but isn't that part of the problem? how am i supposed to get any regular freelance writing gigs if i'm overwhelmed by everything else i'm doing now? is there a different approach i haven't been considering? i feel so incredibly stuck.

Which side of the magazine are you looking work on- the written side or the sales/marketing side?

No more marketing for me! I'm hoping to get back on the editorial side of things. Actually, I'm hoping to perhaps balance a mix of copy editing and writing. Is that even possible?
