Oh my, look at the email I got:
Dear Mrs. C:
Congratulations, a parent has nominated you for the Volusia County
Teacher Spotlight, a good news weekly feature in the Orlando Sentinel.
Please fill out the attached Q & A form and return it to me as soon as
possible. We also need to schedule your action photo. Please e-mail me
so we can schedule a photo of you during class or at a cool campus
activity. Let's schedule your photo early next week, so that we can
publish your spotlight the first week of January! Friday morning,
December 15, at 8:30 a.m. works well for me if you are available.
Dude. Seriously. I am blown away. Wow. I don't know what to think.

Congrats!!! That's great.
I actually ran into a friend from college that I haven't seen in over five years. I was back home for the weekend and I saw her at the gym. Anyway, she's been a fourth grade teacher for the past three years. She told me that even though what she does is tough and the pay isn't that great, she LOVES being a teacher. Fortunately she's saving some money by living back at home, which she's totally okay with.
She basically described her job as working only 180 days, but a TOUGH 180 days a year and that the rest of the year whenever she's on break, she's traveling and enjoying life! That's great.
Every once in awhile when I start to second guess my career, I get an unexpected boost (like a raise (not big raises either), bonus or some type of recognition like you're getting) and it makes me rethink things and realize that I do enjoy what I do; it's just that there are times when things don't always look all too great.

Oh, you bet that newspaper clipping is getting placed in a very conspicuous spot in my teacher portfolio. :D

I'm not sure about that. For sure it's a fantastic feeling knowing that I'm appreciated by someone. Because often I feel like I'm being taken advantage of and nobody cares what I'm trying to do here. I will say I love my students and I love teaching. I still have a few years left (like at least 2). But can I do this for 30 more years? No. And that's how teaching is. I am sure I'll need to find another path. It is wonderful to know that someone appreciates me. It's like having a secret admirer. I still don't know which parent did it. I hinted at it when I told my students their picture would be in the paper, but no bites. I hope I get to know. :)

Feeling noticed for the work you do, and having that acknowledged, is ALWAYS a good thing, no matter how you feel about staying with a profession. Good for you, to get some recognition.

When I made the decision to leave my last job, I had one of the agency director's sit down with me and go on and on and on about how great I was doing and what would it take for me to stay. While I admit it was great to be acknowledged, sometimes you just know when you have to throw in the towel. This guy even talked about giving me a "raise" but I knew that 1.) it wouldn't be a lot and
2.) no amount of money was worth staying in a job that made me that miserable the majority of the time.

I was never told how much of an asset I was to my last job, until I left. Oh well, it's their loss, not mine.

Me too. I enjoy going back and hearing them say how much they miss me.
Well then, why didn't you appreciate me when I was there?!?!?!
