So we did a yankee swap at my friend's house Saturday. I got the gift my old boss brought, which was a belt buckle and a T-Shirt.

But I showed him. I slept with his daughter after the party.

Of course ALL we did was sleep...but my plan has many phases. :D

Whenever I hear of Yankee swaps I think of the N. Y. Yankees.

We have a Yankee swap at our office on Friday.

Maybe I'll get a Yankee cap or a biography of Babe Ruth or Joe Di Maggio to put into the pot.

Ok, so maybe I'm just not with it, but is a Yankee swap more or less a White Elephant exchange?

Pretty much. Whenever I hear "yankee swap" I think of last year's holiday episode of The Office :)

Why is it called a Yankee Swap? Every time I see this thread I keep thinking that it's gonna be about New York Yankee player trading, lol.

I was wondering the same thing, but wikipedia lists it as the same as white elephant:

The White elephant gift exchange, or Yankee Swap, is a popular party game played during the Christmas season in the United States. The objective of the game is for guests of a party to each contribute one gift to the game, and ultimately each guest walks away with one gift from the game. Along the way is a random drawing to determine the order in which players get to unwrap gifts or "steal" previously opened gifts.

We did a yankee swap at my department luncheon last week.

I put in a really nice coffee mug and jack daniels freeze dried coffee.

I got a HUGE bottle of mint shnapps and a flask.

I was #1 and picked first. I went through several presents before getting my shnapps back.
Fondue set
chocolate coffee combo thing
homer holiday singing and dancing toy
travel boston uno with scratch tickets
which I then traded to get my schnapps back.

For those who dont know:
Everyone picks a number. #1 is the best because you pick, then get to watch everyone unwrap and trade then you get to go again once everyone is done and swap if you want to.

So #1 picks and unwraps their gift. Then #2 does the same.....#2 can choose to keep their gift or trade with #1. #3 then unwraps, can then keep or trade with #1, or #2...
This goes on until everything is unwrapped.

I thought this was a thread about a major NY Yankees trade...that sucks! ;-)

Guess I was not the only one though.

Yeah, I would suspect this thread would be frequented by a lot of New York baseball fans...

I don't understand why New Englanders hate the Yankees...they're a self-hating people, since aren't people from New England all Yankees themselves?

Yes, but the Yankees are NOT a New England team. NY is NOT New England.

Yes, but when they say "Yankees s*ck", they really should be more specific, cuz they're really saying "New Englanders s*ck".

Until 1960, when the Patriots arrived, boston was a N. Y. Giants town. I find it humorous that so many New Englanders rooted for a team that played at Yankee Stadium at the time.

Actually, not all NE's are Yankees. Yankee usually means you are a descendant of the very early settlers.

http://www.answers.com/topic/yankee

1. A native or inhabitant of New England.
2. A native or inhabitant of a northern U.S. state, especially a Union soldier during the Civil War.
3. A native or inhabitant of the United States.

Nothing about being a descendent of an early settler.

'Course, if you incorporate Def. No. 3, that means that people from Dixie are Yankees too.

Over there, over there,
Send the word, send the word over there
That the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming
The drum's rum-tumming everywhere
So prepare, say a prayer,
Send the word, send the word to beware
We'll be over, we're coming over
And we won't come back till it's over, over there

Yeah, cuz I want to be the one who tells some guy from the Deep South that he's a Yankee.
