if you haven't read already my apt. was broken into a few weeks ago and everything was stolen. being that i work long hours the theives had more than enough time to go through all my personal belongings which makes me wonder if i should put a fraud alert on my credit report.

they didn't steal any CC or bank statements but the area where i had my jewelry and small amount of cash that was taken was the same area that had my SS card and birth certificate. the paperwork was still there but what if they wrote the info down to use later? also my computer had my resume on it, which has my name, current address, phone number and my employment record so that worries me as well.

i tried calling the credit bureaus to ask them for advice on if i should do the report but have not been able to get a live operator due to the holidays. granted if the theives were dumb enough to try and open CC accounts they wouldn't get far since my CC score isn't great, but i am still concerned because i have no idea who knows what or is doing what with my info.

the thief (or theives) had to be in my apt for awhile to take everything they did and they had to make numerous trips to do so. (i am still eternally pissed that the neighbors more than likely saw what happened and never called the police to alert them to the crime but that is another thread in and of itself)

would you put a fraud alert on your account even if your CC, SS card, birth certificate, and bank statements were still in your home after a robbery and appear undesturbed??

I think it's a good idea just in case.

I agree. You can never be too safe with these situations. Don't really know how the fraud alert works but I think it is the best thing for you to do at the moment. Like your mom always says...it is better to be safe than sorry. Also, I am truly sorry your home was burglarized...that truly sucks.

thanks

i don't know whats worse-getting violated or having the police act like you stole your own stuff or deserved it. i almost felt like i should not have bothered to report it because of how nasty and disrespectful they were. they didn't even bother to dust for prints, ask the neighbors anything, or even assign someone to my case.

Yeah my car was broken into and stereo stolen, the police didn't help much. My sister who works at a police office said in the computers it says a juvenile was caught who stole my stereo. Thanks for letting me know cops, how about making the kid pay to have my car fixed?

i've never been robbed or dealt with the police in any such case, but i do know that you should put a fraud alert on the information you're worried about. call your bank and get a new debit card issued to you. do that first so you'll have at least some money when you go to do it for your cc's. i was at a drive through one time and the lady had my card for about 5 minutes, and i couldnt see her and i didnt see my card, so i called my bank and got another one issued to me. it took about a week to receive it but it was worth it because in that 5 minutes she could have photo copied it, written down the numbers, anything. that is my hard earned money and i wasnt about to let some fast food drive through lady take it out from under me. i did it that evening though... it seems like its been at least a few days since this has happened, i woudnt have waited that long. it'll be harder and will take longer to recover what, if anything, was stolen.

taht really sucks about the police. even though you're not their only case doesnt mean they have to disrespect you and treat you like you deserved it. thats wrong.

you might also want to invest in an alarm. we got one the first day we moved in together (before that we lived with our parents). we both have expensive items, jewelry, electronics, etc. and as i said before, that is our hard-earned stuff. no one is going to take that from us. we bought an alarm at ... lowes ? anyway, you install it yourself, it has door sensors and window sensors, you set a code.. and its LOUD when it goes off. every now and then one of us will forget to turn the alarm off when we leave in the morning .. i wouldnt be surprosed if it wakes up the whole building. -- another reason we got it was because as we were moving our things in, one of the neighbors told us that the girl who lived there before us moved because she was robbed. they think the robber knew her but still.. we're not taking any chances.
