Just curious what other posters' thoughts/experiences with Stamford have been? I've been a couple of times and it seems like an OK commuter town. . .

Stamford is a decent community...I have family that lives there. For the most part, you need $ to live there, but it's not as hoity toity as surrounding communities like Greenwich, Darien, New Canaan, Wilton and the like. It's on I-95 and the Merritt, and there is decent commuer rail transportation. It's one of the more "urban" of the Gold Coast towns in the tail of Conn.

From a personal and urban planning perspective, it sounds good. . . .I'm trying to figure out what the daily commute would be, though? ~1 hour?

Probably. You can check the MTA website for Metro North.

Stamford is a decent city. Although needlessly expensive, imo. When I graduated in 2000 I had a friend living there who was in a basement apartment for $850 a month. If that same apartment had an average of just 5% increase each year, the rent would be over $1100 now. Not exactly a bargain. Plus it's a city you need a car in.

I'm definitely going to factor the car (and headache that involves,) into any decision I end up making. . . and obviously this would be far into the future. I think the next warm weekend day that I'm totally free I'm just going to go up and check it out. I haven't spent much time there, unless I was in transit between my hometown in Maine and NYC.

Sorry. . . New York. I went on the mta web site and the travel time would be the same as my subway trip from Brooklyn into the city every day.

Ashley, would you want to live in Stamford and still work in NY? It looks like it's about an hour or so train ride from stamford to grand central.

Just kicking the idea around (veeery casually.) I guess also having gone to Planning School this is the kind of research I kind of get a kick out of. . . .

LOL @ sky. i always point that out to ppl not from the area when we drive by.
ashley - stamford's alright, but as others have said, expensive. i worked there for a couple years and didn't mind it...but i didn't live there. and yeah, it's about the same time as your commute to manhattan from brooklyn. but a nicer train, with a bar car ;).

That's the thing...it's an hour to Grand Central. But if you work in lower Manhattan or somewhere else, it could take an extra half hour. Plus you have to add in the time to get to the train station. So depending where you work, it could be nearly two hours each way.

Easily, I'm sure. . . btw I do work pretty close to Grand Central, which, while convenient, isn't exactly pleasant, as I loathe Midtown Manhattan, but that's another thread.

It's not quite an hour.
Stamford is nice and all, but people I know live there because they work there. I can think of much better places to live if I was gonna move outside NYC. I'm thinking about moving to Norwalk myself. Totally depends on your own personal preferences though.

Stamford! I have no idea what it's like, but I might head over there if the government contracts I'm tracking are worthwhile. There and Canton as well.
I want to see the statue of the Hero of Canton. :D (the man they call Jayne)
