View Full Version : Too cold to go out?

Anybody else with me? It's in the negatives here for temperature, so the thought of leaving the house let alone leaving multiple bars/clubs to bar hop doesn't appeal to me. Instead I think I will laugh at mid-90's hip hop videos on YouTube and text friends. Curse you and your cold weather, Midwest.

Where I am, there is an advisory not to be outdoors, period, because wind chill is so severe.

I ditched my plans to go catch a movie and am home crocheting and drinking tea.

It was 66 degrees here and I was at the FBR (Phoenix) Open today. It was a great day to be outside. We're supposed to get close to 80 degrees by the end of next week.

But of course in just four to five months, we'll be in the 100s and 100s. So I'm going to enjoy this weather while I can!

I only left the house long enough to go visit a new baby today. The rest of the day was spent curled up in front of the fireplace with a book and/or DVDs. Go Go Midwest....

In 5 or 6 months it will be in the 100's here as well. We really go from the extremes of hot and cold. At least when it is hot out there's always swimming/boating. Now it's so cold the mere thought of stepping outside is scary. However, it's times like this I'm glad I have an office job indoors!

I hate the cold weather because I enjoy being outdoors, taking long walks, sitting on the beach, etc. I become a shut-in during the winter and it's depressing.

Another negative about this cold weather: WEIGHT GAIN!

They had the annual Polar Bear Swim for charity in my town yesterday. I totally forgot about it too until we headed out for the afternoon. I saw these people headed down to the beach in little tiny short-shorts and thought they must be out of their minds. It was like 18 degrees out yesterday.

Its going to be cold in Boston this week.

BUt as for going out, I wont go if there is a major windchill (think 10 below 0)---though even then it usually means heading out to someones house for a pot luck dinner or movie.
Otherwise we head out, just wear warm coats etc.

Saturday we hit the city, had maybe a 5 block walk to the bar we went to....we just walked briskly and made sure to dress for it.

same here. I need to grocery shopping which I might do since it's near my El stop. I also may skip my knitting class since it's a long walk in the cold and wait in the cold for a bus on the way back. I've got two projects to finish up, so it may be worth waiting a week on them.

I seriouly don't know how anyone can enjoy this kind of weather. I can barely breath outside when it gets into the teens. Even in the car with the heat on, my fingers begin to ache, my nose is constantly running and the wind chills make my eyes tear up, not to mention I can tremble so hard I'll bite my own tongue. I sleep like I'm in a coma and end up sipping on hot beverages all day long.

Now 90 degrees, I can handle any day.

Snot freezing in your nose, frostbite advisories due to double-digit below zero windchill, and all the schools in the area being cancelled because buses won't start? Not refreshing.

I just find cold weather to be a great restorative for the soul. I couldn't explain it if I tried.

The first time I went out to west Kansas was a cold January day in 2002. It didn't get above 5 degrees all day. I went out to a magnificent rock formation way out in the middle of nowhere. The wind was blowing about 15 miles per hour; the west Kansas wind ALWAYS blows about 15 miles an hour. I loved it. I felt I had entered the earthly equivalent of heaven. I had never felt so much at one with the world. :)

Not far from the formation was a small creek that becomes the Smoky Hill River. Or it would have been a creek, except the water in it was frozen almost totally solid!

I can remember once in juniour high when some kids snuck into the bus yard and unplugged all the buses. It was pretty sweet the next day when they had a 2 hour late start for school because the buses wouldn't start.

ok so...my boyfriend moved from basically 60 degree weather year round to the negative degrees in the midwest. Poor guy, he's having so much trouble with his car. I know I will be dealing with that crap next year though, so wish me luck people! haha

The cold snap in eastern Canada continues...we were well above freezing until the week after xmas for the most part. Then suddenly in a day or two it dropped to -20C and has been around there ever since.

This morning its -32C here, with a wind chill warning of -40C (which I believe is also -40F!). The high temp today...-25C!!!

Really not easy to get the engine to turn over in the morning on days like this, and my gas usage doubles. Hell I do almost 3000rpms in the parking lot when normally I'd do 1000. I grew up here so I'm used to it...or was until I spent a year in Vancouver lol. Now my body feels all out of whack and I shiver uncontrollaby if there's the slightest bit of wind. I hope it warms up soon or I'll end up getting cabin fever.

Oh yeah and the best part about it being this cold on a weekday morning? By the time I get to work the engine block is still stone cold, yet the windows fog up. Yes...that means all the way to work I have to blast freezing cold air into the car to keep from having an accident.

don't you need your rad to circulate antifreeze???

I've decided that if I'm to live in the most wide open space in the largest country on the continent for awhile, I'd trade 1000 square feet from my house for a garage and seat warmers in my car. And remote start. I don't know how I ever survived no garage to park in. I used to be tough I guess!

No, you need your waterpump to circulate coolant. The radiator uses ambient air to cool the fluid flowing through it. If you block the air flow to the radiator, the coolant doesn't drop in temperature as fast. Thus your heater core would then be made the radiator for the car, meaning a hotter temperature for inside the cabin. Generally it's not a good idea to block off all or part of the rad unless there's a temp guage to monitor the engine temp.
