I really wish they'd tear that place down. I know it has sentimental value, but it's just soooooo old and uncomfortable. Even with all the renovations.

It would be nice to have an updated stadium, but its Boston history and they are making more updates this winter, adding close to 500 seats I think.

Plus its so different being at a small park to see a baseball game than a huge venue, some of it really gets lost in the big venues....its a more intimate feeling watching the game, plus knowing all the people that have played on that field......and all the pictures from when Baseball was THE sport.....its a great feeling.

Cache and Work......the thread title actually includes that Im seeing the Police at Fenway. Please do no make this thread into beating me up with your personal thoughts. EIther comment about how Im going to the concert or please be quiet.

They need to rip out all the seats and replace them with new ones, re position them so they face the right direction, remove the beams so all the seating is unobstructed, add a few more bathrooms, and come up with a better parking situation. Then they can keep the dump around.

It is an ambigious thread title, and I was posting my intrepretation of it. Please do not make this thread into beating me up just because I intrepeted the thread title differently than you intended.

cache and WIP: Apparently trying to play nice doesn't work either. There has to be drama.

BTW: It took me a minute to realise she was talking about the group Police and not the actual Police Dept too.

Same here. It's just one of those instances where you take a quick look at the title and read it a certain way before even getting to the actual post. Harmless mistake. No one is trying to put you down, Cider. That is exciting you get to see the band for your birthday.

Anyways, "Roxxxxxxxannneeeeeeee....."

Good Lord.

I thought about locking this thread after it was created this morning. I should have done so.

Anyway, Cider, you are not a mod, you don't control what people say in threads, whether or not you started them.

If the crap continues, I will lock this thread. I see nothing wrong with WIP or Cache's posts.

Why is it ambiguous? I knew what it was the second I read it, and I often have trouble with interpreting things like that.

I'm a HUGE baseball fan. Seriously, huge. I've always hated the idea of having concerts in ballparks. It just seems sort of sacrilegious to me.

Like I said, I'm a huge fan and often times irrational :0 But it's very cool that you get to go see The Police Cider!

Bellicheck said that's why they tore up the turf at Gillette. They couldn't get the sod to grow back right after the Stones concerts.

I am a N. Y. Yankees fan, but it would be heartbreaking if Fenway (or Wrigley) is replaced by some modern retractable dome Disneyfied stadium. It's very frustrating that Yankee Stadium will be replaced...although it is tempered by the fact that the stadium we have now was refurbished in the early to mid Seventies...which was by far not a magical period in Yankee (or South Bronx, for that matter) history. Also, Steinbrenner once wanted to move the Stadium to N. J., which would have been a disgrace.

Yeah, see that's what I'm talking about. It's just not the right venue for a concert. That just irks me and I'm not even the biggest NFL fan (college > pro. infinitely greater).

The Stones didnt play at Gillette stadium, they played Fenway as well.

The turf was replaced because of the large shadows the stadium makes on the grass and thus it is hard to keep alive. So the grounds opted for the substitution turf.

My mistake. The head coach of the Patriots was obviously lying on national television.

Well, regardless of where the Stones played or why the turf was replaced or whatever, these are sports venues we're talking about, not multi-purpose arenas. I understand the owners wanting to bring in more revenue during the off-season, but I still hate it. The stadiums get trashed and aren't treated with the respect that they deserve. It just bugs the purist sports fan in me I guess.

Im a HUGE sox fan. I think its neat to have a concert in an arena such as Fenway simply because it is so small that its a very intimate setting for a concert where as the larger venues such as Boston Garden or the Tweeter center dont offer that same small crowd concert feel.

I saw U2 at the Fleet center (now Boston Garden again) and while the concert was great, there were far too many people and space for it to feel like a small venue. If U2 ever played at Fenway, you better believe Id be there.

Point taken. Smaller concerts are always a blast. But surely in a city as big as Boston, there are other venues that can provide the intimate setting. It just bothers me to see people screwing with the house that my guys play in...even if it is Minute Maid Park

For the Record, the Stones played at Gillette Stadium on September 20th, 2006. After the concert, the turf was in such disrepair that an order of sod was made to replace the inside strip between the hash marks from endzone to endzone. When the turf didn't take properly, the decision was made to replace all of the natural turf with artificial turf.

I will never see U2 in Chicago, because I refuse to go to a show at the United Center. You couldn't be mroe removed from the viewing experience if you were watching an old VHS tape of Live at Red Rocks from across a crowded airplane terminal.

This is one of the reasons I love where I live. SPAC, in Saratoga, is an AMAZING venue for an outdoor concert. I just love it.

I'd rather see a concert at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom than any other venue in the area. Probably more than Greatwoods too (or whatever it's called now.)

Ciderhillnh
02-20-2007, 03:24 PM
Point taken, yes the stones performed at Gillette......but what they reported on the news here was that it was too tough to maintain the grounds so they replaced with the artificial turf that we now have on the stadium floor.

In Boston there are small venues that hold maybe 200 people, but a band like U2 or the Police couldnt play at a place like that because it would be stormed. Fenway gives enough people access but also keeps it intimate enough.

Im a BIG fan of small venues. I saw BB King in a crowd less than 300, Blood Hound Gang in a crowd less than 200 (and met them and went on the tour bus with them) Cracker in a crowd less than 150, Electric 6 with less than 75, have seen many major DJs with the club at capacity at 750.

Ive seen the B52s/the Pretenders at the Tweeter center, and though the seats were good, still felt that I wasnt really part of anything. U2 at Fleet, Earth Wind & Fire at Boston Pavillion, Brian Setzer at Boston Pavillion, Barry White at the Fleet, Jimmy Page & Robert Plant at the Fleet, NIN at the fleet and Bauhaus at the Orpheum, ICP at the Palladium.

Saw Faith Hill & Tim McGraw in CT at some large venue......

Then there is the South Shore Music Plaza where I saw Weird Al, the Temptations.

All I can say is that smaller venues are a much better concert. Ill still go to the big venues for large acts, but if given the opportunity Ill take it.

One of the most monumental concerts of all time took place in a baseball stadium...when the Beatles played at Shea Stadium in 1964.

'Course, I could care less what they did to Shea...they could have ripped out everything for all I care :)

I once tried to run Andy Summers over with my cart 'o luggage at Heathrow because he cut in front of me in line to check in for the LAX flight. Had NO idea who it was (he checked in right next to me at the desk, but he had a guitar case with him) until the line attendant asked the checkin girl if it was so and so from the Police and she nodded. Guy couldnt get an upgrade so he sat plebe with the rest of us folk- no one noticed him.

Yay though for your tickets!!

It's awesome. . . until your neck hurts for the next two days from holding your head in an unnatural position to watch the game.

It's a cool place. . . just not a cool place to watch baseball. . . and depending on how the stage is and where your seats are. . . probably not the greatest place to watch a concert.

The seats that have 'obstructed' views are out by the bleachers, but they are under the overhang. They have poles, and Ive sat behind them, you can still see the game, they really arent that bad.

Im in section 10, so Im on the upper deck, and they put the stage along the green monster (at least they did for the Rolling Stones, and for the Boss)

Keeping with that, Im sure thats where the stage will be. I know they are not putting seats behind the stage (they didnt for the last 2 concerts, and the Stones were BIG tickets around here and you would think they would even sell really bad ones just to make cash)

Im just pumped to be there. My BF and I were going to camp outside to at least hear the concert if we didnt get tickets.

He was psyched when I zoomed over to his house yesterday over lunch to tell him we got tickets, he had no idea, and was so excited.

The Police in Fenway is going to be fantastic! I love Fenway Park. I lived in Boston for 3 years. Great town, great park. Among my top 3 (Wrigley, Fenway, Chavez Ravine/Dodger Stadium).

:?: Are we talking about the same Fenway Park? The bleachers have no roof and are completely unobstructed. The grandstand that wraps around the the rest of the park is where all the obstructed seeting is.

Yes we are talking about the same park.

The bleachers have no cover, you are correct. There are seats UNDER an overhang BY the bleachers (so if you are sitting in one of these seats you are covered and to your RIGHT are the bleachers), and these are the seats that sometimes have a pole in view or right in front of your seat.

The poles do not exist on the bleacher seats.

You mean the rightfield grandstand sections? I've watched a few games from section 4 and it can be a PITA if there's a pole in the way.

Yup.
And Ive sat with a pole right in my view, and could care less. part of the charm of the old stadium, and easy enough to stand up or take an open seat to not have the pole in my way. =)

Not so easy anymore. The last few times I've gone, the place has been packed right up until the 8th inning.

Who were the sox playing and was it a weekend game or a weeknight game?

All factors make a difference.

Ive sat in the bleachers once, section 4 once, the other times I was 2 rows behind 1st plate, and right on the foul ball line.

Neat too because Jerry Remy who is an announcer for NESN is a family friend, so when I go if I tell him and hold up a sign, he will put us on TV. =)

I sat in the bleachers in 6th grade with our class trip and got all of us on TV. =)

i have never been to fenway, and i am basically indifferent to watching baseball and i also try and figure out who is more annoying yankee fans or red sox fans (but that is a whole other issue) - but nonetheless congrats to you for being able to get tickets.

given the croweded conditions at fenway that have been mentioned in this thred it would appear that if and when they play "don't stand so close to me" it may have an extra special meaning.

Ciderhillnh

Its probably annoying to other sports fans but the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry has been going on for nearly 100 years. Its deep rooted and in families memories for as long as they can recall.

Most sports teams havent been around that long, let alone had a rivalry for that long, so its hard to relate.

But its die hard. Dont dare go out around here with a Yankees hat, just as its a death wish to go out in NY with a Red Sox hat.

My friend had a custom NY plate that said Red Sox (he is from the Boston area originally) he had people intentionally TRY and hit his car!

Ah we're all there because we want to see the Police.....and hearing them play at Fenway is all that matters!

2.) Boston sucks, the Yankees own them.

Well I love 80s music and its neat that after all this time they are going on tour together. I get to see a band I really like that I would have been too young to see tour in the 80s.

The yankees dont own us, they actually have crap stats compared to us for the past 2 seasons. ANd also since we spanked them in the playoffs before going on to win the world series.

i understand sport rivalries - but that is going a little too far - but people are retarded.

i guess if a fan found themselves in unfriendly territory they could always call (or alternatively send a message in a bottle to) the Police........
