So, I got my gas bill today. $395.55! For the period between 2/12 and 1/11. Our last gas bill was $170-something. It's an old house, but still, could this increase even possibly be normal? It was colder recently, but not 150% more CCF of gas normal, right? I'm calling the company tomorrow.

who do you have? i have washington gas and i do notice it leaps in the winter sometimes. my bills are $200-400 in the winter months. but heat is something i absolutely will NOT scrimp on. i don't function well when i'm cold.
maybe it was due to the recent super cold snap? sorry, i know it sucks.

Yeah, Washington Gas as well. I'm just having a hard time wrapping my head around how my gas usage could have gone up by 150% due to a half-month of normal winter temperatures. If, when I call them, they say that the usage is normal compared to last year, then I guess that's it.
The scary thing is, I went and read the meter tonight and according to my math, we're on track to be even higher next month. Thank God winter is almost over.

do you have your old bills? i usually keep mine for at least 2 years so i can compare if need be.
maybe you might consider getting on one of those plans (the name escapes me right now) where they average your usage out based on the last year, so you pay the same amount every month all the next year? no surprises that way.
stay warm (it's 48 right now and raining...no ice/snow!) :)

Yeah. I'm holding out hope that there is something strange going on, because this kind of jump just seems weird.

I just figured the last month was pretty cold so the heat usage went up. I don't know how much our bill came out to be (I don't pay attention when I write the checks to my roommate, who takes care of the bills), but I won't complain about one high month since we saved money from the other months when it was pretty mild.

Mine was pretty high. I think it was around $50 or $60 last month, and this month it jumped up to $85. I have a 1 bdrm, 700 sq ft apt.

Yeah. Higher is expected. It's just the two-and-a-half times higher part that's bugging me. But, the company confirmed that the gas meter is correct. I guess the house I'm living in just sucks.
It looks like my roommates can look forward to the thermostat racheting down to 55 at night.

One good thing about my current apartment...it's very well-insulated. Even though it's boston, my heating bill was only $70 last month.

Well, also keep in mind that we've been pretty lucky here in DC up until about a month ago as far as the weather. The stuff on the ground right now is really all the snow we've had this winter and I've barely even turned my heat on until now (I live in a ground floor apartment and have 2 space heaters). The space heaters are a good way to cut back heating costs for some people, def worth looking into. Either that or move to the bahamas- i'm really getting sick of the sidewalks still being covered with ice this long after it fell - but maybe thats just my neighborhood. rubble rubble rubble - i guess i'm just complaining. I think us dc people need a vacation (no heating bill when you're not there) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61JPX8-mlwQ
