Rest in peace to a VERY underappreciated Celtic great. As someone who grew up in a Laker household, I can appreciate how much havoc he called and just how great a player he was. Condolences to the Johnson family.

No one has said a word here in boston. He was indeed a great player who was underrated.

Didn't he play for Seattle for a while too? The man knew how to play a season, not just a game and he had plenty of finger hardware to prove it.

Seriously? It's been all over everything here. It's all I was hearing this am on ESPN radio.

He was seriously underrated. RIP.

What are the odds that I'm the only girl who responds to this thread? ;)

No one has said a word about it at work (although it's very rare that anyone talks about anything other than work). It was confined to the sports pages in at least one of the papers.

They were playing highlights on the radio. It's so funny to hear Johnny Most's "I just smoked 4 packs of cigarettes at lunch, ate the butts and then gargled with a glass of Jim Beam and a mug full of gravel" voice calling some of the playoff highlights with DJ, Bird and McHale.

I will respond, MetFan! This is such a sad story, especially so unexpected because he was so young. I wonder what actually happened to him.

I used to watch the Celts games with my Dad on TV with the sound muted and we would have Johnny Most on the radio :).

Very good, solid player who was always underrated.

DJ will always have a special place in my memory because of a joke. I remember Arsenio Hall being on Solid Gold doing a quick standup act (this was before his show). Now that I think about it was Byron Allen? Anyway his act came around the Lakers and Celtics and of course he was talking up his Lakers and knocking the Celtics. Well anyway he goes on to say only the Celtics would have a black guy with freckles. That black man with freckles was Dennis Johnson.

I knew Dennis Johnsons son, went to school with him for several years.
Ive been in touch but not recently, so I might go to the funeral to pay my respects.

I have no idea who Dennis Johnston is, but I'm assuming he was a basketball player. Some people were talking about it on the bus this afternoon.
