You gotta move

So I am moving to the city, as the wife beater Axl sings, and will have to drive for interviews in an entirely unfamiliar area (never lived or driven  in a big ass US city before, although I grew up and lived in a big-ass foreign city). I am planning on going there in March to see some friends and explore the area a bit.

I think it will be a good idea to get a GPS car navigation system, something basic.

Is TomTom a good idea? Any other suggestions? Tips?

Thanks,

I don't know anything about them other than the basics, but they seem like a good idea to me. I'm a horrible navigator while I'm driving. I can navigate for drivers while I'm a passenger, but I really can't focus on map analysis while I'm driving. I have always needed a navigator to ride shotgun, so I think that an in-car GPS like TomTom would be excellent for me.

Sorry, late Friday afternoon...not much to do. And I don't have any advice for you about GPSs/...unless you need one for geocaching:D :D

Same here, but I can wing it in a smaller city where the traffic is not as crazy.

I was looking at TomTom's website, and they have an array of products - not sure what I should look for. Plus, there are tons of negative reviews online.

My inlaws came down and their rental car had a Garmin or something. It was actually pretty cool. Very easy. We went down to some more touristy areas that I avoid whenever possible, but we got there with ease. It was really nice. I'd actually consider getting one if I had to drive to new places often. I would get one in a rental car for sure.

Yeah, I've seen them on amazon.

Anyway, I found an article that may be helpful to me as well as others ('cause I am such a good, good Kitty when it's Friday):

I asked a similar question not too long ago. After a lot of research, I ended up getting a Magellan 6000T GPS system (voice/touchpad, etc). I love it so far and it gets me to where I wanted to go. It saves me a lot of time and it's easy to use, and I am hopeful it'll last me a good many years.

I've never used one before, but I prefer the Garmin commercials to the TomTom commercials.

If you are interested in the TomTom, the owner is friends with my boss and we get FANTASTIC deals with him because of it. His office is about 2 miles from where I work.

PM me and Ill see what I can do.....

I totally love tomtoms - i had a tomtom one in my car for a while and really liked it and now actually am using a 910 right now which is really cool because it has a mp3 player in it. the 910 is a little more expensive but its got all of the top of the line features. the tomtom one is a really good unit and i think it sold more than any other gps unit the end of last year around christmas time - you can get one for under $300s and i'm sure there are lots of good deals on it right now. i live in DC and its a must in a big city like that but also amazing for long trips and when you're in a new city. tomtom ftw

Eh.. I don't really like GPSs.. I'll print something out from google maps or mapquest though. You become too dependent on those things. Sometimes when you get lost you discover stuff that you wouldn't normally.

Which is all well and good except when you're needing to get to, say, a job interview in a city you've never been in.

Hey, not many guys can pull off wearing a kilt, catcher's chest guard and NWA hat. Unfortunately, neither could Axl.

Get one with the voice commands. I don't know how people does it without the voice commands, because I thought it would be more dangerous to drive and look at the screen.

It's great when the voice mail tells you a mile ahead, "prepare to exit in 1.0 miles..."

i wondr if there is a way you could test drive one so to speak.

i wonder if it would behard to drive and watch the screen.

I use my laptop with Microsoft Streets & Trips + GPS. It is the only way I can get around the city if I am in a new area. The voice commands are great.

Rand McNally road atlas for me...I can navigate through cities pretty easily and am a big "map fan". I can spot read a map pretty well even while driving (and safely to boot!). I think GPS systems are cool, but I can't justify spending the $400 when a $9.99 - $19.99 Rand McNally USA road atlas does me just fine...

I love maps, but I can't navigate and drive at the same time. Maps are my friend if I'm the passenger.

I cannot read a map and drive at the same time. I can generally read directions and drive, but definitely not a map. It would be nice to have a navigating system in the car to help, but for now, it's google earth and/or mapquest print outs.

Well, it seems like I'll get TomTomOne - the cheapest version of what I need, and it has the basics I need. It's appr. $300, so if I plan for the purchase, Ill be ok.

Check staples and office depot catalogues and websites first. They both have coupons for purchases on items over $100 or $150 that save you over $30 a lot of times, its definitely worth checking their websites and maybe going to the store. Price matching is also a way to save some bucks too, but good choice on the ONE by the way - its very easy to use right out of the box and is a great unit.

You should be able to be find a TomTom ONE actually for around $250 right now on sale - there is a price drop on all of the tomtom devices and you should also be sure that the deal includes the map update wherever you decide to buy it from because it's suppose to be free til the end of the month.

So, I got the Garmin c530. A tad more expensive, but seemed better.

Me likes a lot. About to test it in March (driving to the big city, "when I man cannot be free" as Lou Reed said).

I love the ONE I have in my car - I have a huge road trip next weekend to a town I've never been to before and I'm really happy I have the TomTom to show me the way.
