This is so stupid. I wonder what words are next on the "to ban" list. Cigarettes, trans fats, now moving to words. If people don't want to hear it in music, let them vote with their wallets, not more legislation.

So it's "banned" but there's no penalty? What are they really hoping to accomplish with this?

I wonder what sort of effect that will have on NYC's public school literature. Does this mean that "classics" like [I]Huck Finn[I] won't be allowed?

I would suspect so, if it hasn't been already.

You can't enforce anything with no penalty measures. So nice gesture, but, whatev.

I wholeheartedly believe that laws must be founded on Justice; if laws are unjust, we have a moral obligation to break them.

But we all have individual interpretations of justice, so...

...that's all I'll say on this.

Yeah, my impression is that it's more of a symbolic gesture than actual ban.

This is just sad on all accounts. Sad that anyone would think this would mean anything, sad that it would even be thought of to be necessary. Whats sadder is that I dont think the word will ever go away.

NYC has also long since banned dancing in most of its bars.

Well, it's a despicable word, and it brings back haunting memories of a not-too-distant past where the color of your skin decided whether you can have basic rights such as the ability to vote. However, I do think this is a terrible decision. Schools are as segregated now similar as they were during the late Civil Rights movement (early Seventies). And nowhere is this as bad as N. Y. C., where you have schools which are about as homogenenous as Mississippi circa 1955. While this word should by no right be tolerated in polite society, it is a travesty that City of New York children are not going to be able to understand WHY this word has such deep historical significance. As awful as the word is, it is part of our (soiled) history. This will not help in the long struggle to unite as one people.

Well, I can now. But I've heard such stupid things around here lately that I try not to take anything for granted.:p

hopefully those in charge in NYC will soon get around to banning the rats, and the use of the car horn.

And subway urine.

i have never had the urine there - i usually just stick with a sandwhich on whole wheat and a cookie with a coke to drink.

i'd be o.k. if jared was banned though.
