Thought this was an interesting article...

The line "marriage ruins life" is exactly what I think most of the time - guess I'm not the only one!

Weeelllll... I think that the article was a little too pat in its examples. I would argue the loss of certain stigmas concerning living together before marriage and having children out of wedlock are as much to "blame" as economic reasons. Besides, the weathier couple is several decades older than the poor couple- couldnt they find an older, less wealthy couple?

I dont think marriage ruins life, I think it can enhance it quite nicely if you choose the right partner and put the time into it.

Odd, considering the evidence presented by the article points in the opposite direction. It didn't answer really why people have this view, when the data doesn't support it.

I agree with your comments, esp. with the examples in the article.

I don't get why marriage is only for the elite and well-off. I know a lot of married couples in our age group who aren't loaded.

I don't think marriage is what would ruin the younger couple's life. That's just plain ol' making stupid choices. Marriage aint' got nothing to do with that one 'ere. And the older couple... making how much a year???!?!?! And you think you're "normal"? No. You're not normal. Jackasses.

Yeah, I know it wasn't backed up in data - it's more a perception by people our age based on their experiences watching their parents' marriages -one which I have found myself echoing often.

I did think it was interesting to note the age differences as well as economic and educational differences of married people vs cohabiting couples. However, when they talked about racial differences, they didn't take into account that minorities in this country tend to be less well-off financially and have fewer opportunities educationally - the article should have made that point.
