The advertisement on the top of this page has served it's purpose. I tried to hold out and not get one. I said, "I don't need one" or "Apple will release a widescreen touchscreen iPod the day after I buy it." But since the iPhone came out, it doesn't look like Apple will be releasing that without the monthly AT&T bill anytime soon. It will eventually come out though, there is too much money to be made having a portable DVR & music player.
I even got the Nike + sensor for it to track my running. I got it for airplane trips, biking to work and running. So, I should get a lot of use out of it.

But why only a Nano? Why not a gorgeous, shiny 80Gigger?

I'm confused. Does that mean you like sex with midgets?

No actually it means she's a superhero that uses very few of her powers to save the world.

Kind of like Die Fledermaus from The Tick?

Who is okay with rotating at random through "only" 135 or so songs whilst I save the world.

You need the nano for this.
And I still use iTunes when I'm at home on my computer, that has plenty of mp3s on the hard drive.

I have a Nano that I got for free. My husband got a Mac when the house computer died and he was working on his certification. I got the Nano for free because they had a special going on with the MacBooks last summer. I loooove it. I wouldn't have bought one if I had to pay for it. But it's fabulous. I use it for working out, I use it at home with my iHome speakers (Enya, candles and a hot bubble bath.... yeah, good stuff). I also use it in my classroom. I just got the MP3 for a book we're reading next quarter. For free on audible.com since I had a free credit. Very cool. I also have speeches on it that I found online for free (like the MLK I have a dream speech). Enjoy your Nano!

anyone have an ipod mini? I feel so out of the loop, so old fashioned. When I showed my students my ipod mini, they gave me the weirdest look and asked.."what is that? Is that really an ipod?" Geez, my ipod mini is just a little over a year old. Amazing how technology goes so damn dast these days.

Yep, ditto here. I played some medieval ballads and some other things on my ipod in class last semester. My students loved it. sorta. Loved the ipod, hated the music. lol

That's the problem with technology. It's always updating and getting more and more expensive.
When my 20Gigger got stolen, I found out they no longer make 20Gig Ipods and the 30 Gig Ipod is the upgrade.
When I tried explaining that to my insurance company... Ha ha. I had to then fork out extra money for the 30Gig. Not so delightful.

This iPod thing is great so far.
I love it! And the Nike + stuff is perfect.

So tell me about this Nike thing. Does it just record your pace/distance/etc?

If you have an iPod nano, you will just need this $29 part. It is a lot smaller than it looks like in the picture.

If you don't have the Nike+ shoes, you will need one of these

Or just super glue some Velcro to the bottom of the sensor and the shoe under the laces.
I have the Nike Shox shoes and the sensor fits perfectly in-between the little shocks.

Once you are all setup, it works perfectly. You just start a new workout when you begin running, and then the next time you sync your iPod and are connected to the internet, it uploads your run data to this website.
http://www.nike.com/nikeplus/
Click support at the bottom right to see the tutorials on how it works.
I just went for a quick run tonight, and it shows your pace over the distance you ran, it keeps track of how far you ran, when you ran, and how many calories you burned.
When you are running, it talks to you and tells you how far you have run, the time you have been running, and your current pace to run a mile. You can pick between a female or male voice.

You might also want something like this to be able to put it around your wrist and see it while running.
It does make running a lot more fun and interesting. It makes you want to run and keeps you motivated. Plus there is a good forum there and you can challenge other people, find people to run with, find good routes to run, and see how many miles other people have run. There is also the music suggestions and workout playlists.
If you have a nano and are a occasional or frequent runner, it is worth it.
