What sort of dreams do you have in your life? Personal wants, goals, retirement, travel, etc.?

I've got a reason for asking, I just wanted some feedback first. :)

To just remain happy and content with whatever life brings my way.

Eh, it depends.

I've got a goal of traveling somewhere every year. It used to be "somewhere I've never been," but there are a lot of places that I've been that I want to return to, so it's changed to just a generic "somewhere." So far, that's being met.

Visit out of state friends and family as often as is practical, at least once a year, and preferably at least twice a year. This is particularly important as my grandparents are looking older every time I visit them.

Barring something incredibly unforeseen, I'm going to retire. I'm laying the groundwork for that now.

I want a job that I like doing enough that I'm good enough at that pays me enough. So far, I've got it.

I want a happy marriage, and I'm willing to sacrifice a lot to make sure it stays that way. Now I just have to make it happen.

I want kids, but there's a definite limit to what I will do to have my own biological kids.

Off the top of my head, those are the big goals/wants/priorities. There's lots of little stuff.

Damnit I just had a post and lost it.

Thanks for bringing this up, it's always good to define your goals every now and again (I guess "dreams" = "goals" for me, because I can't imagine dreaming something without at least trying to make it happen).

Dreams in no particular order:

- I want to be able to use my analytical and creative skills in work and play, and to continue to develop them. Also, have more responsibility in my work.
- Make more use of my love for animals and nature
- Somehow use my skill at drawing for something other than personal entertainment
- Travel to all 50 states, and all continents (I could give or take Antarctica, though)
- Retire earlier than age 67.
- Make more $$$, and make the most of it (I mean with investments, etc)
- Live closer to nature than here in NYC, hike more, and do more outdoors activities in general. Learn to climb.
- Own a home.
- Own more pets (!)
- Maintain close and meaningful relationships all throughout my life
- Continue to learn all the time

Does this help at all?

Well one dream, sometime in my life I want to get something published (novel or non-fiction). You know more about that though ;)

Otherwise I think I'd like to make a difference somehow, just do something that helped make someone's life better or that stood out in a sense maybe.

Another dream is that I want to get to a point in my life where I'm really just comfortable with myself and who I am, feel like I've gotten to know what lies underneath all the jumble that goes through my head and found out what my passions are.

It's a great question though, I kind of thought about it the other night. I was watching a "House" episode and someone was dying and it just made me think about how life is so short and you never really know what's going to happen. Makes you look closely at how much effort you really are putting into making your dreams become a reality in your life. So many people say 'tomorrow...' but you never know if tomorrow will be there.

This is a fun one.

Number one I want love and happiness.

I want to do lots of traveling especially to Africa, Costa Rica, and Europe. I'd love to rent an R/V and travel the entire country.

One day, I want kids and I want to raise them as respectable, loving, non-spoiled individuals. I want them to be my life but I don't want my life to stop for them. I want to still travel and go out and enjoy myself. I want to still have adult conversations with people. Not conversations that solely revolve around breast feeding and baby Bjorn's.

I would love to publish a novel (I've had one in the works for three years now) or at least a short story.

I want to become a Licensed Clinical Social Work and have my own private practice. I want to really try to make a difference in the world with my work on a large scale (which I won't get into here b/c I could go on forever).

I'd like to get involved with Animal Assisted Psychotherapy.

I want to be surrounding by loving family and friends and have enriching experiences as often as possible.

As far as retirement, i cannot even look that far ahead. I always want to do some sort of work, even if it is just a couple of days per week. I can't imagine not working at all!

And on a material possession basis, one day I would like to own a convertible. An old VW Bug would be preferable!

Is this a lot to ask for? Possibly but I cannot imagine not having dreams or aspirations. I don't think I would be able to make it through life without them.

My short-term dream is to own a home with my husband. We are working on that as we speak.

Here's why I ask.

I was recently watching a commercial with Dennis Hopper in it hawking some financial planning service for neurotic Baby Boomers obsessed with retirement. He kept talking about "dreams;" in their case, dreams for their retirement.

It got me to thinking. I realized I don't have dreams of my own, and I wondered if maybe that's holding me back some.

I've spent most of my life living for the next quiz bowl tournament; I've never seriously considered the future much. Quiz bowl is the only thing I've ever really excelled in, and more importantly, it's the only place I've found the respect I desperately crave in my life.

But that can't give me everything I want in life, even though I'm not entirely sure what I do want. I only want one really big thing: a large west Kansas wheat farm. But that would be over $1 million at least, so I'm not holding my breath. But I don't have any other dreams, and I just wonder if maybe I should try to find some. :)

Long-term dreams: Be happy about my life and my choices; get my Ph.D. and teach at the college level.

Short-term dreams: run a marathon; be in a fulfilling relationship

This is a big dream for me as well. I'm not really sure if I ever want to retire completely but more do work that I want to do when I want to do it. (just on the retirement dream).

Paul I can understand where you are coming from. I used to be heavily invovled in figure skating and basically spend every waking second growing up doing something that led to the sport. After quitting I was so lost with my life because I really had never had any other dreams than be 'Olympic figure skater' which unfortunately doesn't have a high success rate. I still think I am struggling to find new interests though but it's coming slowly.

My big dream is to make a million dollars in the stock market by age 40 so I can diversify my investments into real estate and precious metals and retire.

I want to be able to spend my time learning more about history and maybe writing a book or two on history.

I want to get married to my special someone (that one is pretty close to being fulfilled).

I want to own a nice little house with my wife and have lots of kitties:)

A lot of my dreams (or goals since I, too, can't dream without attempting to make it true) center around financial security as well. I have been dreaming about that since I was a little kid, drawing floor plans of my future house with a flashlight because our electricity was cut off. :0 Yes, I was a strange kid.

Anyhow my current dreams are:

*Work in a career that makes a difference for people, uses my skills, challenges me just enough, but pays me as much as I'm worth. I am starting to believe this field isn't a myth... it's just not readily apparent.

*Finish grad school by spring 2009 now that I know what I truly want to study and do afterwards.

*Own a home in the area I want to live in and raise my kids there.

*Travel as much as possible.

*Write a novel. There's at least one inside me here and it will come out eventually.

*Maintain fulfilling relationships with those who are close to me. Not be afraid to cut off/limit those who are toxic.

*Get a PhD, but only if and when I know what I want to study and what I intend to do with it. It used to be in English, but I'm thinking that just won't happen. I'm too practical to be a scholar. :p

*Teach on the college level at some point. Possibly as the last career before I retire.

*Which brings me to.... Retire at some point with enough financial security to do what I want.

There are plenty more things I'm sure, but these are the biggies. I've always been a dreamer and a planner. It's how I operate.

That's the way I was in high school and college. I was very good at being a quiz bowl player. It was what I lived for. It was all I had. I left college with no clue at all about the real world. My fault. Quiz bowl players have fewer directly related career options than figure skaters anyway.

I recently met a guy who had won a high school quiz bowl national championship in 1988. He told me he had worked every minute of the day for two years to win that championship. He gave it his all, as one has to for such a goal. They just narrowly won, but they did it. But that was the goal of his life to that time.

Then the team won, and he basically was burned out for the next two years. What to do then? He had no clue. He's now a successful financial planner and has a family and a purpose in life. But I've reflected a lot on that story, because that echoes my life in a lot of ways.

Yah, it's really hard when you pour your heart and sole into something and then once it's gone you really have nothing left. After I quit I enjoyed fitness and all that so I took a degree in phys ed. Unfortunately career options with that degree aren't so great... which has left me in an endless circle of not knowing what to do with my life for the last two years. Finally I think I've come to the decision to teach though, it seems to me this will most fit my interest level and what I'd be post passionate about. I strongly thought about going into insurance and started the course for it an everything but it boils down to I want a passion, not just a job. After doing a lot of soul searching and thinking I think insurance (or anything else I really considered) would just be a job, a duty more or less. At least with teaching I'd feel like I was making a difference (although from what I hear you don't quite realize or recognize it right away). I do have lots of fears and self doubts about it but I think all in all it is my best option. It does feel good though, almost now like I have 'found' myself, or at least have something that I 'do'. Before I was a 'skater' then just a lost soul... :p

What sort of dreams do you have in your life? Personal wants, goals, retirement, travel, etc.?

I want to:
-land a teaching job in a school within 50 miles of where I currently live
-go to europe (Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Greece, in that order)
-get married
-have some babies
-build a house in out in the country
-get an adorable puppy

I guess basically I want my "happily ever after"...

Most of my dreams revolve around the places that I'd like to travel. I don't have many specific goals. . . there is just SO MUCH that I want to see! Having the vacation time to do it is my major limitation. . .

One trip that I want to do sooner rather than later is a safari in Africa. My best friend and I are tentatively thinking about this for next year, but we still have MUCH research to do!

I hope to get promoted a few more times.

I would really like to have kids some day, but if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen. I'm nowhere near marriage right now, and I'd like that to be a part of the equation. . . so we'll see.

The highly attainable goals that I don't make time for/are not motivated enough to do are to cook more actual meals and to exercise regularly.

Oh also, I never want to be too old to go out dancing on a regular basis. . . that grandma on the dance floor. . . will be me. :D

I'm in a similar position as the quiz-bowler and figure-skater. I went to the UK to try and 'make it' professionally as a ______ player (I like anonymity). It was tough when I realized it wasn't going to happen.

Cue college...and now, after working in a cubicle for two years, law school. I'm still not sure what I want to do outside of not being chained to a desk forever. I'm looking into what I'd have to do to become either a special agent for the FBI (ideally in another country) or a sports agent. Law school might seem like a queer choice for someone who doesn't want to live in an office, but from my research, a JD will present the most interesting opportunities.

********

I just don't want to live a life that results in a couple of kids, reasonable mortgage, and weekend discussions of lawn care. Most of my friends and the majority of other people, are excited by that stuff, but I just wouldn't be happy without having some adventures to write/talk about when I'm too old for Viagra.

Reading back on what I wrote, my dream is more about avoiding the 'status quo' and experiencing different cultures. As you can see, I am very focused and will rad at lawyering stuff up.

i want to learn Portuguese.
I want to earn a master's degree in cultural geography
I want to live somewhere warm and sunny, but not loud and chaotic.
I want to adopt international babies.
I want to learn to play the violin.
I want to live in a beautiful house.
I want to have a backyard with a crap-load of exotic plants and a beautiful swimming pool with turquois ceramic tile.
I want to marry someone who appreciates life and simplicity.
I want to get an apple ibook pro.
I want to go to a Dave Matthews Band concert [and a U2 concert].
I want to be financially comfortable...and I want to buy stocks and invest money for my future [mutual funds as well].
I want to learn to sew and make my own dream clothes.
I want to travel...everywhere.
I could go on forever....

I used to want to do something important. Sing on Broadway, Write Songs, Work in Human Services. Live in a big city. Travel. Over the last 10 years my dreams have changed.

Now I'd just like to not have to worry about being able to pay rent.

Now I often wonder if dreams, like hope, may be a bad thing for some.

I still cling to my dreams, (now modified-be a video/sound engineer at night, work a tolerable day job so I can afford to do my "second job" at night) I pride myself on not giving up on them.

But being so far from them I wonder if having them hanging over my head is really only killing me.

And how easy if would be just to be happy to pay the rent, to want nothing more.

My dreams is to be financially secure and able to do the things that I like to do, that is to travel, dancing, reading, playing chess, visiting friends and families and volunteering for good causes. However, this will take time, dedication and commitment on my part in order to fulfill this dream. Then, when there is an SO in the picture these will be different as instead of “I” it would be “We” and compromise on certain things we both will set for like; house, kids, etc. Another thing is to spend much time with the SO, be in good health (as I found out about my biological parents; how long they where together before they both passed away at a young age) to enjoy the company we share and the memories we make, and to have a wonderful love sessions after reading Ian Kerner, Ph.D. books.

As for the financial part of my life, I am actually working on that by myself (building up my portfolio, experimenting on bank CD’s) and thinking of other things as well. Hope it will work out alright, than again life is all about taking risks, right?

We are all searching for our meaning to our lives, everyone. We have too. Because no matter who you are, I don’t think anyone is born knowing the reason why they are here, it’s just something you have to find as you go along. And that, its different for everyone, there’s many reasons to live as there are many people in the world, maybe even more. So the reason for being born, the reason you are put here in the world; I think it’s something we all have to find ourselves. So we search, within our hopes and dreams, our work, the people in our lives and everything we do. Even if the reasons we find are hazy and unclear, even if it’s so tiny that you can’t hardly see it. The important thing is that you always have one. As long as I am alive, that is what I want. To have a reason, to go on.
