One of my very best friends is in a horribly abusive relationship. Luckily she's been opening up lately and telling me she wants to get out, but she is worried about her lease. She's in a month to month lease, living with her asshole boyfriend. Is there any way to get her name off the lease without having to have the boyfriend sign? She doesn't want to tell her boyfriend she is moving out, she just wants to do it while he is at work, to be SAFE. I worry about her safety. She also worries because her boyfriend can't handle the rent on his own, but I feel like thats his problem to deal with.

She needs to contact the National Domestic Safety Hotline (http://www.ndvh.org/), they'll have info on wha she needs to do to get out safely. I wish you both the best of luck.

I went through the same thing.. she really needs to get the police involved and put in an order of protection, and tell her leasing company, they will let her vacate the apartment for sure most laidlords will help out if they know safety is an issue..but if her name is on the lease, and she leaves without talking to anyone it will be her responsibility to pay rent if hey stops paying or since he sounds like a real jerk he may even abandon the apartment once he finds she has left and isn't coming back.. I sooo sorry for your friend, I went through this with a crazy guy i dated for 2 years(found out late her was borderline).. i hope things work out, but she needs to make a paper trail with the police if she hasn't already. Guys like this don't give up easy, had to move, change my number, email.. everything. He scared the crap out of me, but in the beginning they can be so charming it is almost unreal.. best of luck;)

If the rent is month to month, how is that a lease?
