I have one on my left arm that says "As the world turns" in a calligraphic font , but I want 2 more that I have yet to get drawn out. The idea is a skeleton with a top hat, throwing dice at a craps table, with a drink in hand. The other is much easier, a Buddhist symbol which is called the eternal knot.

it looks like this: http://www.exoticindiaart.com/artimages/Pic4_sm.jpg

I'm trying to convince my buddy who recently graduated from art school to draw up my other idea.

Anyone else have tattoos or ideas they want inked?

I'm definitely going to get another tattoo at some point. I still have a ton of room on my right arm. I dont really know what I want yet tho. Maybe something symbolizing honor and integrity. I've also always liked that (Japanese?) lettering.

I want a dragon or the hindu goddess Kali on my upper back, either on or in-between my shoulderblades. The only thing stopping me is I can't decide which....

As of right now, I have the two I want, two small Celtic designs on my back...a celtic knotwork shamrock between my shoulderblades, and a claddagh at the base of my spine. I love them.

I've been itchin' for another one, maybe two. Can't decide where - somewhere on my forearms maybe - but I know what I want. Placement is hard to decide! It would be the first tattoo(s) that I can see on my body without the aid of a mirror.

I'm thinking about getting one on my upper back too.
I figured a bird of some sort, ala Anthony Kiedis of RHCP.
I also kinda want to get "forever me" or something like that somewhere.

I am totally tattooless. However, I do have a small birthmark on my wrist that is in the shape of a spade (as in the card suit). Too bad I am not a card player.

my girl's got a big pheonix from her back that goes up her right side, but it looks really nice.

It's when girls get whore-ish tattoo's like the red and teal stars above their tits, or ugly breastplate tattoos... soo nasty.

I was super paranoid about getting the claddagh that I got too big (I got it at the QLC Austin meetup; Tina, Coll, and Brillo were there), had some conferring with the artist about not wanting it too big. Tina helped convince me to go a little bigger than I'd been planning, but I think it was fine, it's still proportional.

I could do "QLC4" and "EVER" across my knuckles. WHAT.

And I don't agree about girls having small tattoos. I think a big, beautiful tattoo looks good on anyone, girl or guy.

YES. DO THAT.

I know what I want: Fidus et Audax (Faithful and Bold)

I know where I'd like it: out of sight, probably on my lower back. I'm not thrilled about that, but I am not willing to jeopardize my career for some body art. *shrug*

I am also beyond terrified of needles and may never end up getting it.

There's a lot of places other than lower back where any body art won't be visible in standard business attire. Guys actually have more flexibility than women, in that sense. I was pretty rock solid in wanting mine to only be places where I could show them if I wanted to, and easily cover them if the situation warrants, and that kinda is more limiting, with much female attire.

Interestingly, I'm really not a needle fan, myself. I can't tolerate hypodermics, injections, having blood drawn, etc. without getting very panicky. But the tattoo needleworks isn't like that. It's more of an etching thing than an injection thing, even though it is many small injections. The sensation, though, is more of being etched on. Which, really, is what is happening.

See, I'm vaguely aware of this...but I'm not a fan of having a tattoo on my hip or upper back area or my legs or my upper arms. To me, if I get a tattoo on my right hip, then I will feel the need to get one on my left hip. It's all about the symmetry.

But I don't have any idea what else I'd put on my body, so... :frustrate

As for the whole needle phobia, yeah - I am really just a big ol' wimp and I know - logically - all the 'it's not really stabbing you' stuff. I'm just a wimp.

Mine are both centered, and symmetrical designs.

I highly recommend taking loads of time to reflect on a design before you get it, though. For my first, I made a pact with myself that if I still wanted the design five years after coming up with it and conceptualizing it, I'd get it. Worked out fine. My later one was the result of several years of reflection, as well. I don't see myself ever being a "walk in and pick one off the wall" person.

Exactly the way I feel. I have one asymmetrical tattoo but it doesn't really bother me, mainly because I can't see it. But that's why I was thinking I'd have to do both forearms instead of just one. Unfortunately, I only have one tat picked out so I'd have to come up with a second.

The one I mentioned - Fidus et Audax - isn't something I will want to change. It's my family's clan motto and one of my sisters already has it (on the back of her neck). I am thinking of placing a single trefoil knot over top of 'et', but I am not yet sold on that.

I think the lack of symmetry would drive me nuts. My SO has a phoenix on his right shoulder and he's apparently got something picked out for his left, except his artist is busy having a baby and won't be back to work until December, at the earliest.

A friend of mine had a simple black tattoo. He carefully drew it on with permanent marker and told everyone he had already gotten it to see how he liked it for about a month. When he decided he was happy with it, he really got the tattoo done. Obviously that would be a lot harder to do with a more detailed, color tat, but it worked for what he wanted.

Yay! I can add to this thread now :). I have a celtic shamrock on my middle, lower back that has some yellow and green shading to it. And it hurt like hell, i don't care what anyone says :p. The artist had to stop twice since it looked like I was gonna pass out. That sound of the needle and the feeling just makes me whoozy. Even when WS was getting hers, I had to leave for a bit!! LOL.

It definitely doesn't feel good, that's for sure, but for some reason, it's been totally bearable for me. Surprising, because my pain threshold isn't the highest. But I can honestly say that almost every sunburn I've ever had has hurt worse and for longer than it has in the process of getting a tattoo and it healing.

My brother's advice when I first was thinking about getting tattooed: "Tape the design to your bathroom mirror so you have to look at it everyday. If you still want it after a year then go for it."

I didn't take it, but that is good advice.

I can't understand how anyone could just walk into a tattoo parlor and point to something on the wall (and I've dated two otherwise intelligent girls that had done just that). Boggles the mind. Maybe there should be a seven day waiting period or something...

I do have a couple semi-visible tattoos (white ink on the insides of my wrists) but hardly anyone notices them before I point them out. I'm so glad I didn't have the $ to get all the stuff I wanted to have done back in the punk rock days, you really can close a lot of doors with badly thought-out tattoos. Score one for poverty...

The one on my lower back took a little over an hour and between the fact that I had a HOT guy tattooing me, Cypress Hill playing and I was laid across the back of a chair I would go between falling asleep and having to literally bite my lip to keep from laughing because it would start to tickle.

oh yeah! I have 4. One on the base of my spine, One on my right calf, and two on my right shoulder blade.

One of them on my shoulder I got in Austin when Word got the one that I said, "Pleeease get it bigger, you won't be sorry." Maybe not worded quite like that I was too busy flirting with the cutie that was designing my tat for me. :)

I have one more that I want to get that startsbetween my big and second toe and goes down to the arch of my foot and back up to my ankle. I want it to be a line of buterflies. I will also get my daughters name on me. I haven't decided where yet. I think if I decide I don't want anymore kids I will get her name on the inside of my wrist. If I want more I will probably go for the ankle so that I will just add to an anklet if/ when I have more children.

The after part was fine; it was just the actual process of getting it done that wasn't pleasant, hot tattoo artist i've knows for years helped ;); especially at the very tip, on the edge of the spine. Healing wise it was OK.

ehh i guess it depends on the type of girl. some girls look good with them big tattoos others do not. i opted for a small simple black tattoo on my lower right ankle, symbol of my berber ancestry. like others mentioned, i knew i wanted it for years but waited it out, thought about it often, and drew it on to see if i still liked it. contemplating my next one, possibly the leo symbol in black...not sure of the placement though...but i like keeping the symbolic black ink theme.

I guess it just has to work out right. When you look at a girl and can just tell she got exactly what she wanted and is completely happy with it, it can be really sexy. But when you look at a tattoo that doesn't look like there was any real thought behind it other than the fact of getting a tattoo, you can just tell. Like my buddy's sister who got a ladybug on her ankle. She's not into ladybugs or anything. It was just the smallest tat they had stock. But then VB has this really cool tat on her shoulder that you can just tell she spent a lot of time planning and deciding over and it's really cool. And this is coming from a guy who's really not into tattoos.

I agree with Meat on this one - my sister's first tattoo has got 'I got this b/c now I'm legally an adult!' written allll over it, even though she did put some effort into designing it. Her second one - the one like I want to get - is a nice font, well-done, the whole nine yards. It's simple - just the words - and she now wants to get some delicate embellishment (knot work) to it. Her second 'fits' her much better.

Part of me is torn about getting it on my lower back b/c I will never ever see it. I'd like to enjoy it, you know?

I forget about most of mine. Every once in a while I will catch a glimpse in the mirror (especially of my leg tat) and my heart will jump to my throat because I think there is a bug or something on me. I've had the one on my leg since I was 18

My girlfriend in college had one of those "I'm 18 time for a tatoo!" tatoos. It was about 4 or 5 inches long on the side of her calve -- it was a giant rat with a tux and a top hat and a cane. It wasn't a cute rat either, it was really fucking ugly.

I pretty much can't deal with "character" or cartoon/cartoonish tattoos, or ones that are logos and the like. I much prefer original designs, or things that are more abstract. I know a guy with Mighty Mouse on his pec, and a chick who has a big-boobed cartoon devil chick, like Betty Boop with horns and a tail and pitchfork, flipping you off tattooed on her leg. I have a hard time finding the meaningfulness of either now, and really don't foresee them getting more meaningful and cool with age. But, hey, neither are on my skin.

I wanted a tattoo hardcore when I was in college. I was going to get a tribal band on my forearm or I wanted my name in Japanese writing going down my arm. I even priced it and was shopping around for artists. I used to wear fake ones during the summe rto try them out.

Then my friend got one on her back and suddenly she looked exactly like all the rough, ghetto chicks in the hood with gaudy tattoos running over their bodies (cause all the ghetto hood rats had them). The ghetto association stuck and I never went back.

To be honest, part of the appeal of getting mine is because I'm from a fairly socially conservative rural area where nice, educated, bookish girls raised on farms aren't commonly viewed as likely body art candidates. I kind of like the unexpected factor.

won't have major issues when/if my body changes shape.

Hardcore determining factor for me, too, regarding placement.

Also why I can't get any more, unless I get existing ones embellished. I've used up the few concealable spots on my body that aren't likely to stretch/sag/droop/chub out.

That I can definitely understand. Part of the original appeal for me was that at first few people had them, it was kinda original. Then very quickly EVERYBODY had them. 40 and 50 year olds have then and my 60+ aunt has them.

Wasn't so cute and original anymore.

Hah. My brother was the first of the three of us siblings who have ink to get his. He also wasn't a likely candidate, stereotypically (apart from being a Div. I collegiate athlete hotshot)...quiet, bookish, clean cut, not particularly wild and crazy or artsy or hardcore or biker or punk. My sister tormented my pretty straightlaced dad for AGES, coming home from school with temp tattoos, telling him they were permanent, and he'd always get pissed...just doesn't agree with them, thinks they're shortsighted and (primarily) a waste of $$$. So dad was already anti. I remember when my brother randomly unveiled his to the fam; it was when they were all visiting me in Chicago, and we were chilling in my living room, and he suddenly just whips off his shirt and says, "Check out this bad boy." My dad got really irritated and sulked the rest of the day, seething that his advice on not getting inked wasn't heeded. Then my sister got an actual one, and then I got two. He still thinks they're wastes of money, but he conceded that my last design was pretty cool.

My mom is fine with them if they look nice. She actually was with me when I got my first one. My sister (who got hers retouched while I got mine) and I tried to con her into getting one, but she didn't wanna piss my dad off. I remember when my sister was in college, she told my parents she was either gonna get a tongue ring or a tattoo, and my mom pushed for the tattoo over the tongue ring.

DAHAHA!! I had my tongue pierced in high school, and for a short while, I was the ONLY person in my high school with a tongue ring. Then I went to college, took it out, and got my labret pierced. That's the one under the lip/above the chin. I was pierced with the smallest guage possible, and had a tiiiiiny silver ball in it. Several times, someone would ask if I'd just had it done, like a year later.

I don't mind ears and noses on some people (as long as it's side of the nostril, not septum, I never like the bullring look). But other than that, I don't prefer piercing. I dated a guy once with a labret, it looked okay on him.

I used to have holes all the way up one ear, but all but my bottom ones have closed. I used to wear silver hoops of diminishing size going up that ear.

For whatever reason, I feel like piercings for the most part are pretty juvenile (with the exception of ears), but they were fun in high school/college. Tattoos seem more timeless to me, maybe because they can be artistic and original, whereas piercings are always just gonna be metal in your face.

I got my tongue pierced my soph year in college and kept it in for a little over a year. One of the main reasons I did it was that I have an oral fixation. I'm ALWAYS chewing on gum or pen caps or eating when I'm bored. When I got it pierced it was something to play with that kept my oral fixation in check. I actually lost a good 10lbs or so that year. I liked it then, but I'd never have it as a professional. Also another appeal was that it was something drastic I could do that wouldn't leave much of a mark once I took it out. You can still see a mark on my tongue, but only when you look closely. Very few people notice it now.

As far as the tattoos go, I was one of the ones who got one when I was old enough just because I could (actually, I got it when I was 17, but that's neither here nor there). I now really wish that I had put more time and thought into it, but whatever. It's on my lower back so I don't ever really see it. Most days I forget it's there anyway. I'm one of those people who just does things on whims. Which is good in a sense because I usually don't overthink things and spontaneity is a ton of fun, but can be bad in some cases, like this one.

A butterfly, like every other girl my age  But it is a pretty cool looking butterfly...it's not one of the generic ones. Since then I've seen a ton of tattoos that I'd rather have there, but oh well. Maybe someday I'll get a better one somewhere else to make up for this one.

LOL, just last night I was talking to this insane tattoo artist who kept going on and on how if he did one more butterfly or tramp stamp (also where my tattoo is) he was gonna scream. LOL. I guess I never thought of someone in that profession getting bored w/ their job :p ...

The "tramp stamp" thing annoys me...if you're a woman, and want a tattoo in a discreet place that's easily concealed by clothing if need be and won't show in formal wear if you don't want it to, you're REALLY limited in options. Duh, why the lower back is so popular.

When I got my first one, I didn't want to go the cliche route and get lower back, so I got it up in between my shoulderblades instead. Since I don't wear backless things to work, really, it's still concealed professionally, and my hair's long enough that it will cover it if my back IS exposed and I don't want it on display for some reason. The exception would be with a plunging back and an updo, which is exactly the position I was in when I as a bridesmaid in my brother's wedding. But, since I'm actually fine with it being on display, it wasn't a big deal.

When I decided I wanted a second one, though, this meant that elsewhere on my back was the only real option left, so I had to go with the lower back by default...it's a symmetrical design, too, so I centered it. Really, it was the default area, what I had available if I wanted a new design, even though the spot is cliche. What are you gonna do, though? I don't really want arm or leg ones, I'm not keen on wrist/ankle/hand/foot ones, my butt is not so phenomenally amazing that I want a design on it (plus, I DO like being ABLE to show my ink if I wanna), and I'm NOT having one put anywhere near my abdomen, because in the event that I carry children at some point, I'm prone to stretch marks, and a distorted tatt surrounded by stretchmarks just does not appeal. So lower back it is. And now I'm out of prime real estate.

I would think a real tramp stamp would be if a girl got a bulls-eye tattooed between her shoulder blades. :D

People ignore those signs all the time anyway.

yea, anything beyond piercing just strikes me as grotesque (gauged ears, mutilation art, etc)

My buddy who just graduated art school is drawing my wicked tattoo idea about the skeleton in a top hat playin craps.

I have the eternal knot on my wrist! It's in three shades of blue and it's beautiful. Reminds me of my karmic responsibilities whenever I see it. That said, I don't know that I'd recommend a tattoo that can't be EASILY covered by work clothes. It's really hot in Texas in the summer, and long sleeves are getting old.

As long as it is small, wrist tattoos can be covered with bracelets, watches, cuffs, tied bandanas, etc.

If you're working in an environment where any ink showing is a big no-no, it's probably a place where bandanas and wristbands aren't okay, either. But a watch could work.

I chose my tattoo locations specifically so they could be both easily covered and easily displayed.

I disagree, I know lots of jobs where you cannot show tattoos, but the dresscode is otherwise casual. Lots of stores and restuarants for instance, and even some offices.

*wracking brain to think of an office that doesn't look askance at a bandanna tied around the wrist but outlaws visible tattoos*

Pretty much any in which the person in question works at a low level job in my experience. Many offices dont care what thier cleaners or call takers or envelope stuffers wear, as long as it meets the few criteria, as far as not showing tattoos, or stomachs, or whatever. There are a lot of casual offices these days. I worked at a NGO that had no dress code at all really, people wore jeans every day if they wanted, but we couldnt wear hats, show tattoos, or wear sandals. Very random, but it happens all the time.
