Anyone planning on doing a summer vacation this year? If so, where to, when, for how long, and is it solo or with people? I just want to get an idea of where people normally go.

I'm going to Ireland for 10 days, leaving this Saturday!!!!!!! and then 3 days in London as well. CANNOT WAIT... and i'm just going w/ my sister.

The rest of the summer will be spent doing very cheapie weekend things if anything at all.

4 days in Kennebunkport ME with my BF and his father and fathers GF

Will have an overnight trip in RI to head to Block Island for a day with the large crew in July.

I have a wedding in August in the western part of MA.

September Ill probably be heading to Bermuda again but this time with minimal business needing to be taken care of, this would be with my family.

And in October planning to go to Hawaii for 10 days with my BF.

I've never done summer vacations.

I do do weekends here and there whenever I can, but that's not necessarily just summer. I also generally do stuff where I go visit friends, so it's different than a resort-y type vacation and whatnot.

I never really had a real summer vacation. Even when I was in college, I'd still go to summer school to just get classes out of the way.

This summer, I have two weddings to go to, both back home.

Other than those, that's basically it. The BF and I haven't really planned for any vacations yet, though he is coming with me to one of the weddings I'm invited to.

I'll be in LA from Memorial day until that Thursday.

I haven't gone anywhere major in the past few years but this year I'm planning a cross-country road trip with the BF and am VERY excited about it.

We're starting in MI and driving to San Francisco and then to Seattle (and then I'm flying back, because it's a lot of time off work, but he'll have to drive back).

Sounds cool everyone. My roomie is planning on flying out to Seattle and then driving to Portland to visit friends.

Am I the only one who never gets invited to weddings? Albeit none of my friends really do the traditonal wedding, I've only been invited to one wedding in three years. So sad. Weddings seem more of a summer tradition/vacation than anything else.

July wedding in Pittsburgh, PA - weekend
(August vacation for a week to Charleston, SC w/ immediate family - maybe)
September wedding in Maryland - weekday
September wedding in State College, PA - weekend right after the weekday wedding
November wedding in Pittsburgh, PA - weekday/weekend (I'm the maid of honor...)

Geez. Enough with the weddings already. :p

My SO's family is also going on a cruise in November, but it's 10 days and I have no idea yet if I can manage to go and still have vacation days for the holidays and stuff. :frustrate

Mostly, I think this year will be weekend trips.

Nope. I have no weddings this year so far. None last year. About one or two a year for previous years. Either I don't have many friends, or they don't get married, or they've already gotten married a while ago, or they are getting married sometime in a vague and distant future.

That said, I'm pretty pleased because aside from the occasional fun laid-back wedding they are mostly pretty boring.

I'm hoping to get back to PA to see my relatives this summer. Dad and I will have to discuss that at some point.

Nothing this summer-- maybe going up to see my family for a couple days or a couple of beach weekends. . . otherwise, might do Europe again this fall, or go on a cruise this Winter. . . but I'm getting mixed reviews about my friends' destination, the Bahamas :0

Hopefully, 12 days of Alaska or 13 days of North Cascades in August for some primo alpine climbing and possible ice climbing, then some general mountaineering. If that doesn't happen, wedding in Morocco should do the trick. All else fails, crash at my friend's in London for a week.

I never get invited to weddings either. Not many people I know are getting married yet.

I am getting married at the end of September, so no summer vacation for me. I will be in Hawaii for two weeks in October though :D

I'm leaving in five days for an 11 day storm chasing trip. It remains to be seen how well the weather will cooperate, but even if it doesn't, there are plenty of interesting things to see and do in the plains.

8 days in Mexico with my family (brother's wedding).
7 days in the Smokey Mountains (best friends family vacation, and a mutual friends wedding)
and a weekend trip to Baltimore (friends wedding)

sooo,...3 vacations for weddings.

This sounds very cool. I need to plan this type of trip sometime soon.

I'll be in Hawaii from the Saturday before Memorial Day through the following Saturday. Heading out there with my cousin where we will stay either with my cousin or my aunt and uncle.

2 weeks later, I'll be in KC for a long weekend. It's a weekend-long graduation party for my cousin as well as another North American mini-family reunion.

Another long weekend at the end of June to stay at a beach house down the shore that my friend is renting for a week.

Needless to say I'm looking forward to the summer...

I haven't taken a real summer vacation in a couple of years, but do take mini weekend trips to the beach, Atlantic City, etc. My friends and I are planning on taking a cruise, but not until the fall.

I won't be having one!!! And I'm excited about that. :) I will probably do a three-day weekend trip to the beach (I love Clearwater) or something... maybe Amelia Island since you can ride horses on the beach there. And I'm going out to Vegas for my SIL's wedding at the end of next week. We'll probably drive out to the Grand Canyon while we're there, but other than that... nope.

Have you ever done this before?! It's so freaking fun! (okay, except the part where my horse thought that maybe out to sea was a good idea, but...) I was in St. Maarten's with my friend and it was unbelievably neat.

Well, probably several day trips down to the shore here in Jersey (Pt. Pleasant for the locals) and most likely 2 trips down to the Wildwood/Cape May/Atlantic City area (sun, fun, and gambling!). Once with the GF, and once with the family since that's the tradition.

Of course, I'll have to take a day and go to Six Flags also.

My friend's beach house will be on LBI. I like to head down to Long Branch for day trips. It's pretty chill and not too far south where I have to deal with Belmar traffic on the GSP.

I know it is. I didnt want it to be that way. Originally I just wanted to do Portugal and Spain or Spain and France but then since I chose contiki (because I am going by myself) I will be cruising through several countries at one time.

I am more concerned about the pickpockets than pervs.

Ooh, watch out for the pickpockets in Florence. I almost had my bag stolen off of me! Keep your bag/purse/whatever tight on the front of your body. I went all over Italy (from Rome to Venice, Sienna, Pienza, Assisi, Verona, Florence, and some other smaller places then back to Rome) and that was truly the scariest city I visited.

I never felt particularly unsafe in Rome. And I spent a good few hours walking around LATE at night with my girlfriend drunk as hell (MMM, vino) trying to get back to the hostel. We walked nearly to the Vatican and let me tell ya... the hostel was way the hell on the other side of town. What can I say... we were really toasted. I walked from the Colosseum to the Spanish Steps (a LONG ass haul on foot) all by my lonesome and I never, ever felt unsafe there. Florence... *shudders* It was beautiful, but I thought it was pretty unsafe there. Venice can be kind of scary since you never know when the street is going to end at a canal or a brick wall and it's like a maze. Be careful walking around Venice too.

It took 3 weeks. I took a winter semester Renaissance Art class. It was quite the speed trip. I would skip some of the smaller places if you had less time. I would do Rome, Venice and Florence again. Verona was nice, but eh. Stop somewhere in Tuscany (not sure of the specific cities in that region). I haven't been overseas since studying abroad in college.

Nothing technically this summer, but I'm going to Europe (UK/Amsterdam/Germany) for the first two weeks in October. Going with two friends.

2007 won't be a big travel year for me - I was on vacation for 8 weeks in 2006, so this is more of a work/earn year.

I just wanted to add my input regarding the posts on Italy. I've been to Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice, Siena and Pisa; and probably felt the safest in Florence. Both of my trips to Italy were just with another girlfriend and we never felt unsafe anywhere. Enjoy your trip!

I am leaving next Wednesday to spend the summer interning in Boston, so my summer's pretty much going to revolve around that. But I am going to take a quick road trip to Lake Placid and Stowe, VT this weekend.

I also have a bunch of grad school friends that are coming to visit me in Boston memorial day weekend, then other visitors the rest of the week. I'm hoping to get more visitors later in the summer and take get a chance to check out all the fun stuff in the area, plus cape cod and maybe some of maine.

Oh, and I'll probably spend a long weekend with a bunch of college friends at the house my friend's family rents at the St. Lawrence.

Ooooh this thread is making me excited already! I am going to New York City (for free!) because I am going to drive out there with my parents and brother and help my brother move there (Manhattan I think). Then in August, my boyfriend and I are going on a cruise to Key West/Cozumel with his best friend and best friend's wife, who are awesome. I'm unbelievably excited for both!
