I need to hire movers for the first time. Any suggestions on how you choose one?

I asked the management at my apt complex who they'd recommend in the area. I guess it depends on how far you're going and how much stuff you have though. Mine wasn't that far away and I live by myself, so it was just some college aged kids with a truck and trailer and that worked just fine for my needs. Plus it was pretty cheap that way.

If you are moving across state lines, I'd recommend one of the big companies (i.e. United Van Lines, Atlas, or Mayflower). There are some horror stories of moving companies taking peoples' stuff hostage unless they paid much more than the previously agreed amount. From the Dateline or 60 Minutes episode I watched, Federal law is pretty weak in this area.

If you are moving locally, try the chamber of commerce? I generally try to go for big companies with a reputation to protect. It costs more but the convenience and peace of mind is worthwhile to me.

Movers are rip-off artists so make sure you have stuff like padding (for a mattress box maybe), everything already boxed and taped, and have your own tape as well. Personally, I would only use movers if there were no other options.

Definitely double check with the Better Business Bureau on the company that you want to use to move your stuff.

The one I had when I moved from CA to AZ sucked! They underestimated my move and took their sweet ass time to get move my stuff.

The only good thing was that my new job paid for my moving expenses, but I did feel bad asking for more money to move my things.

If you're moving locally within Chicago, I would suggest Reebie Movers. I've moved with them twice and they've been extremely professional, affordable, and very quick. Both moves went pretty well.
