I have been there and know the feeling sucks. Just look in your local newspaper, alternative newspaper or your city's Convention and Visitors Bureau website. These ought to give you ideas on things to do.
Sometimes I just will go to the local B&N or a coffee shop and chill.

I spend a lot of friday nights at home. I think I have two pieces of advice:

* There's nothing wrong with spending friday night home alone. I know that a lot of times it makes you feel like a loser or like you have no social life (believe me, I've totally been there and I think most of us have). But don't let it get you down.

* If you feel the need to get out, then get out. Even if you can't find people to hang out with it can be satisfying to go out and do something. What you do depends on what you like. Sometimes I find going out on a bike ride can be nice, but I'm a little unusual in that I like riding at night (and have lights and such to do it safely). I don't really like going to bars by myself, but there are a few bars where they have really really good beer on tap...that I like so much I am happy to just go and order one beer which I can sip slowly and enjoy. Occasionally I'll strike up a conversation with someone but if not I enjoyed the beer. I prefer coffee shops if I'm going to be alone...I go and order a cookie or muffin and some tea, and just read. Sometimes you can find coffee shops or bars that may have live music you enjoy. Then you can just sit back and enjoy the show, and feel like you're doing something. You also may be more likely to meet people if you have a common interest of music that you both enjoy! Also there's a local bar here that serves gelato (like ice cream) and I find I like to go get ice cream sometimes when I'm feeling down.

So yeah...either find something fun to do at home and be happy with it, or if you really need to get out...then just get out. Don't have the attitude that you need to meet people, find something that you want (an ice cream cone, a pint of good beer, a good cup of coffee or some nice baked goods, or something else like music to listen to...) and go get it...and enjoy it. You may meet people but you probably won't...so just be happy about enjoying something!
