I received my visa today via FedEx, and noticed that it said I had to register with the police within seven days of entrance. Don’t know if this is the norm, but I do remember reading about some people having to register with the police. Did anyone else have to do this with a student visa? It sort of makes me feel like some sort of terrorist.

It's so they can keep track of you.
I'd also seriously consider checking in with the US embassy/consulate, so that they know you're in the country.
Just in case.

I know it's for tracking, but the US wasn't on their list of those countries that needed to be registered.
I should just let it go and chuck it as post 9/11/ terrorists fears. After all, when I went in June, they were running checks on everyone's passport and made us all go through a gazillion scanners.

I'm a Canadian here in the US and when I was on a student visa I was pretty much asked to register everywhere. I'm on a work visa now so it's a little better but I still need to let the government know where I am at all times, for e.g. if I move to a new apartment I need to let the government know my new address within 10 days else it's a federal crime and I can be deported.
Ball n' chain situation ;)

Yes, I am heading over to London on the 21st of September. Ugh! It's so daunting to think about all the logistics I have to figure out -- that is, with the move itself, graduate school, and now this government stuff.
I know that the US is very tough with all this stuff. I didn't think they would be so tough to Canadians though.
