I'm looking up some info. on a masters degree program in community counseling, which seems to well fit my personality. I want to work with adolescents, but I'm not sure about the whole teaching career. This program sounds interesting and it sound like something I would like to do, but I remember reading people's comments on social work on this website and not many good comments were made about the worth of getting this type of Masters. Any opinions? I know there are a few of you who are in the field of social work. I really need some opinions on this. I know that in any field of social work paperwork is a biotch. But that's all I've come to understand so far. Please give me some feedback! Thanks!

I can't answer your question in any way but have another career suggestion.
Have you considered school psychologist? A friend of mine left the IT world and became one. She loves it, but I don't know how much she makes. I'm sure its a respectable amount of money though.

I remember someone mentioning...it might have been Winney, that school psychologist/counseling jobs are hard to come by and are a living hell considering the amount of students one counselor is responsible for. I don't know.

She does say its a lot of work. Very rewarding work to her though. She actually splits time between 2 schools. I don't know if she is grade/age specific or not or how it works. She is in the Denver area so maybe it might affect how the load is.

I don't really have a lot of time to comment right now, however, I highly recommend looking into a MSW program. It is an extremely flexible degree and jobs are much easier to come by with this. I also cannot recommend enough the importance of getting a job in the field to get your feet wet and see if you like it before applying to and starting a Master's of Social Work program.
