OK, so I want to send the finalized music list to the DJ on Monday. Anyone have any good ideas for songs for a father-daughter dance? Please nothing really sappy like "Butterfly Kisses" or the like. I also am not super-super close with my dad, which adds another element to the mix.

I used Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" because both my dad and I like it. We both are not into sappy music and it was short which was another bonus :heehee:

Ben Folds' Gracie is a sweet, short song. (Even if it is a little sappy.)

I'm glad you're trying not to go the sappy route. Anything from your childhood that would be cute? My dad used to sing Elton John songs to me when I was a wee tot in the bath, so I'm pretty sure that's what I'd do for a father/daughter song if I had to make a decision.

I was going to suggest the song that we did the mom's dance to, but I can't remember what the song was now. Anyway, if I had done the father/daughter dance, it would have been to 'What a wonderful world'.

How about a classical piece of music or would that be too out of place with the rest of the song list?

Example: Offenbach's "Barcarolle." It's light, waltz-like.

That's what my dad and I are dancing to!

Hey Winney, have you decided on your 1st dance yet?

First dance, yup. That's been decided for awhile. We are doing a Billy Joel song because it relates to an inside joke when we first met, and he told me "he would change my mind about Long Island". The song is "Just the way you are". Still deciding on my dad............this is so hard!

I didn't want sappy either - we almost danced to "What a Wonderful World," but I think that is what my husband danced with his mom to - much more appropriate for them. However, my dad was into music and used to play in a band, so we danced to "In My Life" by the Beatles:

There are places I'll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends i still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life i've loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When i think of love as something new
Though i know i'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know i'll often stop and think about them
In my life i love you more

Though i know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life i love you more
In my life i love you more

I was always a daddy's little girl! I love talking about wedding dances...winney and pisces, "Just the Way You Are" was ALMOST our wedding song, but we chose something called "I Love You" by the Climax Blues Band (9 Days did a cover of it, but we did the old version). The dance that we did with our bridal party was Edwin McCain, "I'll Be." I love music!

because i have very dark brown eyes, my dad and i danced to Brown Eyed Girl. It was great...it's a pretty fast beat, people thought it was sweet, and the "sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-ti-da" was a perfect part for him to do some quick turns. my dad's also a great dancer, so that helped...people were very impressed.

as for the sappy songs, i knew i wouldn't make it through one of those without crying since my dad's so sick right now...i couldn't really handle thinking about the possibility (however unlikely) that that would be our last dance.

another thing to note was that my dad and i did our dance at the rehearsal dinner, because we couldn't dance in the church where we had the ceremony and the reception. because of that, my husband and i could also not do our first dance in the church, so we vowed to do it on the honeymoon. so one night after dinner just before we were about to go back to our room, "My Girl" came on, and we danced alone in the middle of the open-air resort lobby to My Girl. Funnily enough, immediately after that, Brown Eyed Girl came on. It was actually a perfect moment...I wouldn't trade it for anything. My Girl probably wouldn't have been the song I had picked if we'd done the dance at the reception (we would have danced to "These are the Days" by Van Morrison) but I think it actually worked out perfectly, and that'll probably be a song we call "our song" for a long time.

I think sometimes the best moments are the ones that are unplanned.

I totally didn't know you were doing that song P! Funny! My fiance and his mom were going to dance to "In my Life" but his mom thought that it was too depressing, talking about death and such.

I am STILL trying to figure this out. I'll let y'all know what I decide!

Heartland- "I loved her first"

Look at the two of you dancing that way
Lost in the moment and each others face
So much in love your alone in this place
Like there's nobody else in the world
I was enough for her not long ago
I was her number one
She told me so
And she still means the world to me
Just so you know
So be careful when you hold my girl
Time changes everything
Life must go on
And I'm not gonna stand in your way

But I loved her first and I held her first
And a place in my heart will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But it still hard to give her away
I loved her first

How could that beautiful women with you
Be the same freckle face kid that I knew
The one that I read all those fairy tales to
And tucked into bed all those nights
And I knew the first time I saw you with her
It was only a matter of time

But I loved her first and I held her first
And a place in my heart will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But its still hard to give her away
I loved her first

From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
Someday you might know what I'm going through
When a miracle smiles up at you
I loved her first

We still haven't picked our first dance, but I picked my father-daughter dance years ago. It's Winter by Tori Amos. Kind of sappy but it fits me.

now there's the fact that I don't know how to dance  Don't know when i'm going to deal with that.

I'm going to do "You are My Sunshine," because my dad used to sing that to me before bedtime. It's a good one, because there are so many different versions of it.

That is super sappy. I know Winney off-boards, and I don't think that's the type of song for her and her dad. It's definitely not one for me and mine!

Yeah, we also wanted something more "up" and Just the Way You Are is actually a rhumba! We are taking dance lessons and our instructor was so excited when we told her our song, because it's a great song to dance to and has that beat.

The wedding I was in last year, the father-daughter dance was I'll Remember by Madonna. It's sentimental, but not super slow or sappy.

My sister did "The Way You Look Tonight" by Sinatra for her and Dad. I thought it was cute. :) It's also fun to dance to!

I also like "Isn't She Lovely" by Stevie Wonder . . . It's Stevie singing about his daughter. . . how sweet is that?

I personally will *someday* pick a totally non-wedding, non-sappy song that is a fun song for my dad and I. People will probably say, "WHAT THE HELL?". . . but I love it. "Only the Good Die Young" by Billy Joel. . . and yes, I'm a Catholic prude, but that's a favorite song of ours!

How IS your dad doing??? Did you have a good wedding/honeymoon?

Why couldn't you dance at your reception? I'm confused...

my dad is doing okay...not great though. the treatments are really getting to him and he and my mom are having to drive to a place an hour away everyday for the radiation because of an insurance issue. it looks like he's starting to be able to eat again, so that seems to indicate that the tumor is shrinking, so of course that's great.

the wedding and honeymoon were wonderful. I couldn't have asked for anything to go more smoothly. we had tons and tons of help setting up for both and breaking down...i actually think a good majority of the guests actually helped get the tables and things put away, which was certainly not expected but very much appreciated by us and by our families. and the honeymoon was awesome...michael had upgraded us to a honeymoon suite as a surprise, and the entire week was wonderful just being together.

as for not being able to dance at the reception...we had the reception actually at the church where we got married, which was an Assembly of God church. We do not attend AofG (we are both members of a Baptist church), but our church was not really suitable for a wedding like ours (it seats maybe a thousand people and we had around 75 guests), so we had gone looking for another church. plus, the price was great at the AofG church ($350 for the sanctuary AND the reception hall). So anyway, AofG doesn't allow any sort of dancing in the church (Baptist doesn't either really), so we'd have had to had the reception elsewhere if we wanted to dance, and we really didn't want to shell out the money for another venue. Maybe that was us being cheap, but I'm really happy with the way things turned out...my father-daughter dance was awesome, and michael's and my first dance was a very private (and very public at the same time) moment. he's not really much of a dancer, so he was hesitant to dance in front of everyone at the reception anyway.

besides, it was kind of nice that our first dance was a spontaneous thing...not planned at all and not forced. We didn't have to be nervous with everyone watching us, and we got to share the moment between just the two of us.

thanks for asking about my dad, though...it's nice that you remembered.

My friend used this song. Funny that I'd heard this song a millions times. . . but I always thought it was a guy talking about a lost love (didn't really listen to the lyrics completely, I guess). Yes, a bit sappy, but it's a cute song. It was perfect for my friend and her dad!

because i have very dark brown eyes, my dad and i danced to Brown Eyed Girl.

Brown-eyed girl was the song that was used at a few weddings I've been to, but not for a dance, but for the video montage.

It's used as the background music when the video shows pictures of the bride as she's growing up. Then the video will show pictures of the groom. Then pictures of the two together.

Cute idea, but I don't have time to do that LOL. I am getting some cute ideas from another message board. Someone suggested if I pick a longer song, to invite the other fathers and daughters up half way through the song. I don't know if it's my taste yet, but maybe it would work for someone else "Fathers and Daughters" by Paul Simon.

Almost every wedding I've been to had a video montage. Now I'm beginning to think it's just a Filipino thing? LOL Because the non-Filipino weddings I've been to, there wasn't a video montage at all.

Erika - The Hawaiian version of that song would be really nice, too (the humming riff from it is used in a Rice Krispies commercial, actually, hah). It also segues into "What a Wonderful World," which has been mentioned sev. times on this thread. It's takes the standard tunes and makes them a li'l bit diff, which I like a lot.

Hoodie, Hiatt's "Have a Little Faith in Me" is one of my favorite songs EVER.

So I faxed the DJ my music list today, otherwise, the more I think about it, the more I will make myself crazy (and something tells me people won't remember the music chosen anyways ;). ).

I went with:

Wildflowers by Tom Petty for F/D dance.

During the ceremony, the bridal party is going to enter in to "The Way You Look Tonight" by Kenny G. We looooooooooooooove the Sinatra version but I didn't want the singing........I was originally going to do "Seasons of Love" from the RENT Soundtrack, but felt it would be too overpowering. I'm entering to "L.O.V.E" by Nat King Cole.

At the reception, the bridal party is entering to "Higher Ground" by the RHCP. My husband-to-be and I are entering to "Don't Stop Believen" from Journey (yes, we are biters from the Sopranos!).

So that's the update in case anyone is interested LOL.
