Hi!

I am a finalist for a position that I have wanted for over a year (patience is a virtue) and expect that I may be in serious talks with folks this week. My question is how do I approach the salary questions. I've read that the candidate should never be the first one to state a number. I am also concerned because I entered my current position as a temp and have felt underpaid for 2 years and want this position to make up for that. Advice appreciated!! :)

Are you going from temp to perm? I'm not sure how that works. Generally, when I go after a position, I would first check if the company has a job ad out there with a salary range on the ad. If so, I would use that as my base for negotiation. If not, I would check for similar positions' salary range. If none of data are available, then you have to make a decision on how much you want the job and the money. For example, if you make $30 an hour now, and this new job is much more demanding, then $35 - $40 is fine. You also need to look at the entire package. How are the earning and growth potential of this new job? If this job offers great opportunities, then taking a pay cut for now just to get in the door might be acceptable to you as well.
