I just moved to a new area and don't really know anyone. On top of that, between commuting and work I usually get home around 8 PM so I'm so tired that I just eat and go to bed. Does anybody know of a good way to meet new people and friends in a new area so I'm not bored out of my mind all the time? Have you just started conversations with people hoping it would turn into something?

I just moved to a new city (hell a new part of the country) a little over a month ago myself. What I have been doing to make friends and attain a social life is talk with classmates in my masters program and I joined a Meetup group for people new to my area. Have you looked into meetup.com? Its not a bad way for meeting people in your area with similar interests. I went to my first event last weekend where I met 3 new people and have another event scheduled for this week. Just remember that it takes time to make new friends in a new place.

I've met a lot of people through my local sorority alumnae group. I've also met people through a Yahoogroup targeting women in my area looking to establish long-term friendships. I've been really busy the past few months with work and wedding planning, so the "new friends" thing has kinda been put on the back-burner.

I would join a church or volunteer in the community for a cause you believe in as a couple of examples. Anything that causes you to interact with folks around you on a regular basis. The more interaction you have with people, the more you'll get to know them better.

I'm certainly no expert on meeting new people as I am currently friendless. Not sure what type of area you live in, but the bigger the city the more opportunities there are for meeting people.

If you are open to going the online route there are sites dedicated to meeting new people:
meetin.com
meetup.com
craigslist

You could also try volunteering or taking a class.

I'm in a new town, and I'm assuming that I'll get to know people the way I always do...through work people and people they know, and through activities that I like to take up, like choir, church, yoga, etc. Also messageboards.
