Has anyone ever taken a job that caused them to live away from their spouse? I'm considering taking a job that would cause me to have to effectively set up a second home out of state. Just wondering if anyone's been on either side of this and how it affected your relationship.

I haven't dealt with this personally, but I have several friends whose husbands work away from home. From what I have seen, the effects are damaging in the long run. In every case I can think of, one of the spouses had an affair and they ended up divorced. I'm sure this is not what happens every time in this situation, but it's what I have seen.

I haven't taken a job away from my spouse, but he has lived in a different city because of school. It was only for about 8 months and it was a two hour drive. We didn't have any problems, but I think that since it wasn't a very long distance it made a huge difference.

I'm debating going to school about 4 hours away now, so I am a little worried, as it will be for a longer period of time, 3 years.

I do know of a couple that did make it work, but that was also many years ago (an older aquaintance) and that might make a difference somewhat.

One of my uncles took a job in NYC and made it home on weekends, but he had a boatload of cash for flights - something I'm not sure I'll have.
