Hi guys,

My boss just made me the supervisor of this other girl that works for us. (Now instead of just being me and him, its her, too.) I"ve been a supervisor before, but at a 'real' company, and I always had someone in HR I could take my questions to. Now I"m the supervisor AND the HR person.

She's got some issues with my boss that I wont go into and she was telling me about some of them the other day, just to make conversation though, or maybe to see how i'd react.. ANYWAY.. one of the things she said was that because she's got these medical issues, he can't fire her for being absent from work for so many days, etc. because if he fired her for that its against the law. That's probably true, and along the same lines you can't hire/fire someone based on age, sex, race, etc.

My question is this: Is there a book or guide or something, or somewhere I could go to find all those things that an HR person is supposed to do or not do? Like, if she had a problem with the boss and came to me for suggestions, or if my boss told me 'im going to get rid of her because she's out so much and doesnt do much' or something along those lines - where would I find out what I can and can't do? I know im probably giving a long explanation for a phrase that is probably short, but I've never been in HR before and I just know the basic rules. Where can I find the more advanced rules???

What she said is not totally true. This depends on a number of criteria. She can absolutely be fired from her job for missing too much work.

I'll PM you about this particular sitation and see if I can find you some additional resources. . .
