I can't chat at work either. Most people probably can't. So what I am propsing is a Chat Link. Most message board type websites have a chat link in addition. Taht way you can either post or chat w/ the people who are on at that time. So you don't have to be there at a certain time, just luck of the draw (or login) as to who's there and the topic.

Good times for a change
See, the luck I've had
Can make a good man
Turn bad
So please please please
Let me, let me, let me
Let me get what I want
This time
Haven't had a dream in a long time
See, the life I've had
Can make a good man bad
So for once in my life
Let me get what I want
Lord knows, it would be the first time

layback- i'm not sure what could happen. some companies automatically block it, some don't. I know that some ppl just use the internet version; that one you don't have to download onto your computer.
At this fine institution, some depts actually use it for work purposes so the univ. can't block it.

Wait a second, there was that conference call I sat in on the other day, and oh yeah, I helped out with some pricing issues for a $30 M prospect. So, I guess that I may have earned alittle bit of my paycheck. Mostly, it's all about QLC. Is that a crisis in and of itself?

No, I think it sucks that you make more than me and do no work and have no one breathing down your back. That really makes me sick. And sad. :(

It wasn't always like that Jen. Back when I made alot less, I used to bust my ass, get in here early, and actually care about the things I worked on. I had a real passion for it. Then I realized that no matter how hard you work, you always get a 3% raise, which equates to d@ck, when you factor inflation into the equation. Not to mention having a boss that asks how you are doing, but cuts you off half-way through the sentence becuase he doesn't care and only asked you because it's his version of an introduction. So, I decided to play the game, go into sales, work for incentive $$$, and only do the things that had a payout for me and f@ck the corporation, it's shareholder's and my boss's action item list.
I used to be so PC and corporate-friendly, that my big shit-eating grin could have wiped the shit off of a large pig's ass in one foul swoop.
Since I have adopted my new attitude, I don't take shit from anyone, I tell people where to go, including senior management (no lie), and I look out for number one, 24-7. I rarely do work, unless I am going to see more money. In fact, I told my boss's boss the other day, that I have less motivation these days because I am no longer in debt, so money isn't an issue for me. I went on to tell him, that I have no passion for sales. He started selling me on this new position, because he has "so much respect for me" and feels that my attitude might be inspiring on the new team that he is trying to create. I actually told him that I think I am immature, and he disagreed with me, and told me that I just need exposure to the "RM World", the area that I want to pursue, in order to further develop myself.
It's really pretty funny. Maybe I just don't see myself the way others see, me, but the more I think my attitude sucks, the more I get rewarded. I actually got a raise, a promotion, and a bonus this year, and I had the nerve to tell my boss that I wasn't happy with it, and that I feel I deserve more.

Damn. But still, here I am, asking my landlord if I can give him 1/2 my rent now and the other 1/2 in 2 wks at my next paycheck because I have so many other bills to pay, have my bosses breathing down my neck, and get no additional raises until next year...it sucks. :(
I hate money. Unless I have a lot. Then I love it. I was alwaysx the one in HS and college who had tons of money because I didn't spend too much, saved as much as I could--now all my savings are gone. Boo.

If I can offer any advice to anyone, it's this. Prove your value at work (make them NEED you), put yourself in a postiion of power financially (no debt), and then you can make demands, because if they don't like the demands, you can just tell them to f@ck off. The more you take this position and don't back down, the more they:
1) respect you
2) meet your demands
3) need you

Jen - I am so sorry to hear that. I know how you feel because I was there too. I agree that it sucks that I goof off while you struggle. It's not right and if I could change the world, beleive me, I would. We live in a very, very fucked up world, and people's values suck. I think my biggest source of anxiety is inner conflict about the way that I am forced to conduct myslf and the way I'd like to live. Mind you, I am not a scumbag, I just wish I could be passionate about what I do and do it not for money, but because I love it, and have my rewards be just the same.
People in my office run around like chickens with their heads cut off and they make 1000 cold calls, only to get 2 or 3 meeting quarterly. Me, I make about 100 very precise, very targeted calls, I charm the people on the other end of the phone like a Buddist snake charmer, I get my 10 meetings quarterly, and I walk away with a bonus. It's really f@cked up that I stopped making calls after I hit the 10 mark 2.5 weeks ago, but it was an emotional battle the entire time I was sprinting towards the goal and quite frankly my reward is the same wether I sit here and try to figure out who is the moderator, or if I make another 20 calls and get a couple more meetings.
Anyway, it totally, sucks. I agree.
But DON'T let it get you down, and don't sell out for money. I am struggling to find a place where I like what I do and I am rewarded equally. I hate my job, and I'd much rather be broke and happy.
I was alot cooler, had alot less anxiety, and always smiled, when I thought that $35k annually was alot of money.

Thanks guys...I think it's a huge change because I used to have so much money and it's all gone...AND it's hard to resave what you've already spent! I'm not spending frivilously either :(
Joe, I never thought you were a scumbag. So don't worry. I'm pissed at the "system." My uncle and dad work together--my dad does all the work, but my uncle still gets paid.
Kimmer, yes, the other things in my life are going well. But see, it's always something. When I had the money, I had no one to hang out with and to spend it by doing stuff. Now I have more people and no money! It's like the play "No Exit." It's like being in hell! LOL

By the way, I ussed to pay my rent in increments too. $200 this paycheck, $200 that paycheck. I have been there too.
Jen, you are a smart, intuitive person, with a greta head on your shoulders, and all this crap that you are experiencing is not in vane. Hang in there my friend. Get that grad degree, pay off your loans, and make a stand.
You are going to do GREAT.
P.S. You've probably already ironed it out, and I don't mean to be patronizing, but if I can offer you any help at all with a budget, please don't hisitate to ask. I have learned alot about money over the last few years.

i think we have all been there.

Thanks Joe! I keep telling myself, there has to be a learning lesson from all this. I can't WAIT to start school on Monday. I am soooo excited! I feel like a little kid--I went out and got my notebook last night. I am a dork! Thanks for the budget help, but I do okay with that part...it's just not having enough sometimes or unexpected things, like car needing work, cats being sick, etc. I used to have a much better "cushion" for things like that, but that went bye-bye when I had to pay for my grad class. I'm going to the bank tomorrow to find out about loans.
In my current job, no advancement. Unless I switch teams or departments or even find another position in the university but out of the library. They are laying off people here, so I'm lucky to have a job and they will reimburse part of my tuition.

I hear you. It's uncomfortable for me to put myself in a new situation at work after all I have been through and go back to school at the same time. I'm not sure that I have finished adjusting to my anxiety disorder just yet, but I also hope that new things will take the focus away from the past and on a new hope for tomorrow. We'll see. I am going to give it my best shot or die trying.
