View Full Version : CMA's -- All Hail the King and Queen!!!

CMA Awards last night.
Is there anyone bigger or better than King George, George Strait? The new kids do great, but they're seriously forever going to be looking up at the summit to that guy. He just keeps going. I didn't realize this, but in all time gold and platinum album sales the ranking is 1) The Beatles, 2) Elvis, and 3) George Strait. The guy's simply an icon.
All that said, I'm declaring Carrie Underwood the Queen of Country Music, if for no other reason than she's super cute and I have a compelling interest in taking her home and doing bad things with her! Her first single should have been "Jesus Take the Wheel (Because Carrie and I Are Going to the Backseat)."
I have a funny story about her...after she won American Idol, my grandmother informs me that she knows Carrie's grandfather (grandma is from the Checotah area and our whole family is from Oklahoma), and that she should see about getting she and I together because she is sure Carrie would like to meet a nice lawyer. Um, sure, grandma...thanks. Please sit quietly and eat your soup now.

I would have to vote for Garth Brooke as the King of Country. I just heard that he has outsold Elvis now. Go Garth!!!

Garth's huge, no doubt. But even he says George is his hero.

And Garth didn't do it for 25 years.

I used to get pissed that there was a Latin Grammy's and a Vibe Awards but no "White Awards" show until I remembered the CMAs. :D

Um, Hank Williams will always and forever will be the king of country. These people today are way too Hollywood.

The first time I heard "Jesus take the Wheel", I thought it was a joke.
Then it did become a joke, because I couldn't stop saying stuff like "Jesus start my wiper blades".

"Jesus built my car. It's a love affair, mainly Jesus...and my hotrod."
"Eh, fuck it."

Garth is currently effing up my evening ride home...he's playing the fourth of a nine-show series that sold out instantly tonight at KC's new concert venue, which is about a block from where I work. This cowtown's chock full of cowboys at the moment. Reviews have been pretty great.
And, yeah, he just outsold Elvis as the highest selling solo artist of all time, I believe, and now is just only behind the Beatles.

Garth puts on a great GREAT live show. And if he plays covers like American Pie or Night Moves, you can't believe how great he does those.
But for a more traditional country sound....King George all the way.

Don't forget Johnny Cash.
To my ears modern "country music" is mostly just mediocre rock'n'roll so it doesn't do that much for me.
"Jesus built my car. It's a love affair, mainly Jesus...and my hotrod."
"Eh, fuck it."
"Soon I discovered this rock thing was true. Jesus was the devil."
That takes me WAY back...

Which is why George Strait is so good...he's still making solid Texas swing type songs into hits just like he was in 1981. That's hard to do over time.

It wasn't "Jesus was the devil." It was "Jerry Lee Lewis was the devil."

Which, given the mention of Johnny Cash in the prior post, reminds me of the scene in Walk the Line when they're all in the car together and June Carter goes, "Where are we going?" And Jerry Lee Lewis goes, "We're all going to HELL!!!"
HAHAHAHA.

Admittedly, I have fewer brain cells than I did back then but I would swear it was "Jesus". Are we not talking about the same Ministry song or are you fucking with me?

Nope, dead serious. Do a lyric search.

I love country if it employs a bluegrass sound/instruments/style, but other than that, it's really no diff. from pop music to me. But I really, really love bluegrass.

Not much of a "pop-country" fan here, but I LOVE the blues, particularly from the Delta...I could listen to Son House, Charley Patton or Robert Johnson for hours. I also like roots music and bluegrass.

I adore George. Agree that he's the king. Ask ANYONE in Texas! I saw him in concert last year. While he's not very animated. . . his songs are just so damn good. . . and he has SOOO many great ones.
My favorite thing here is that on his birthday, they play 24 hours of George. When he does a concert here, 24 hours of George.
Love it.

George IS king, for real. I love the old Nashville country from like the '80s and early '90s, but I find the majority of the new stuff to be just so-so.
I'm in love with Texas Country though. I think it just has a better sound, the lyrics are more fun and it's really cool to see an artist play a bunch of free shows at the local rodeos or little bars and slowly grow into a big act on the Texas Country scene. Then you get to see them play all the time at the big festivals in Texas where everyone's just hanging out with lawn chairs and coolers. Everybody's super friendly, singing along and having a good time. You really can't beat it. :)
PS, I LOOOVE 24 hours of George, TinyDancer :) Oh and, we need to go to Chuy's sometime soon!
