View Full Version : Hell Will Freeze Over When. . .

List some things that you think will never happen. Things that would require climate change in Dante's Inferno to accomplish. Can be serious, or maybe not. A few examples:

Hell will freeze over when we see Hillary Clinton in a pink bunny suit on TV (a la Richard Nixon 1968).

Hell will freeze over when the St. Louis Blues win the Stanley Cup. 26 consecutive seasons the Blues made the NHL playoffs, and never even made it to the finals. :(

Hell will freeze over when Katie Couric says: "Resistance is useless! Surrender yourselves to our new Iranian masters!"

Hell will freeze over when Teri Hatcher comes to my house and professes her undying love.

Hell will freeze over when Missouri governor Matt Blunt has an affair with a Planned Parenthood activist.

Hell will freeze over when I win the Main Event at the World Series of Poker. Really, hell would have to get at least slightly chilly for me to even win another quiz bowl tournament. I'm terribly rusty. :(

Hell will freeze over when St. Louis' Metrolink light-rail system doesn't cost $100 million per mile to build. Or when I can conveniently use it.

Hell will freeze over when The Eagles reunite. Oh, wait. . . .

You might as well play the lottery. There is so much luck involved in winning that tournament now that you might as well just play to cash.

I don't win playing the lottery. That's why I don't play it. I don't play in casinos for the same reason.

I haven't played cards in months. I should start again. It was something that usually made me happy. It's just hard to risk that money right now while I'm looking for another job. I like having it as a safety net until I get my tax return in a few more months. I wish the cable company would e-mail or call me back and tell if they're interested or not. Time to start making the rounds at the banks I guess and see who's hiring.

Hell will freeze over when my boyfriend wakes up and finally asks me to marry him.

Hell will freeze over when Britney, Ashley, Paris, Nicole, & the rest of the members of the Poor Decision Makers Club start acting like adults.

Hell will freeze over when someone decides to take a chance on me and offer me a job.

Hell will freeze over when I can find a job where my workplace is close enough for me to ditch my car, and commute by bicycle. (I LOVE riding my bike to and from classes, and temp work, in the summer. I wish I could do that all year  Public transit isn't much of an option in my hometown, and there's no public transport available from my home to my workplace. I guess my carpool will have to suffice...)

Why? Is Illinois going to somehow magically beat Oklahoma for either the Jayhawks or Tigers?

1 National Title

All in 8 years.

Hardly. Anyone who's played football knows that if you can't go, you can't go...through no fault of the other team. He was getting 4.4 per carry and had 45 yards in the game. Those are hall of fame numbers projected out over a healthy career. Peterson's own ligament kept him from getting 40. Not ancient ass Brett Farve and his severely overrated defense.

Oklahoma lost to Texas Tech after losing its starting QB in its first series and still only did that by 7 points! That's a HUGE thing - to lose your starter. Well guess what...he was back this week and they beat a team that beat Tech 49-17.

I say Oklahoma struggling with Tech without its QB is no reason to believe that Oklahoma isn't still Oklahoma.

I also say that Missouri has NO HISTORY playing on the biggest stages in College Football....and that's all Oklahoma has ever done.

11-25-2007, 10:21 AM
I dunno. I always roll my eyes when people cite history as a reason for prediction in sports. You can flip a coin a million times and get heads, but it doesn't change the fact that you have a 50% chance of getting tails on the next flip. There's still a 50% chance Oklahoma could lose, no matter how well they've done in past competitions.

Kragthorpe
11-25-2007, 10:37 AM
I'm not citing history, I'm citing experience. Anyone who knows sports, be it players, coaches, reporters, whoever, will tell you that experience on the big stage is a huge advantage when your opponent has never been there.

Boise State notwithstanding, I do suppose.

Kragthorpe
11-25-2007, 05:08 PM
And I've got to say this is the single worst college football season ever. If Missouri and West Virginia are ranked #1 and one of those teams lost to Bob Stoops' 7th best team (of the 9 he's had at OU) by 10 points and the other lost to South Florida? Please.

Tell the 1980 US men's hockey team that experience mattered. ;)

The most beautiful part of it all? Even if Missouri should somehow run the table and win a national championship....it will still be Missouri and will go back to being Missouri, and Oklahoma will still be a top ten college football program contending for multiple championships for the forseeable future.

and1grad
11-25-2007, 05:26 PM
I think thats part of her point. The Olympics are so far beyond college football in terms of big moments that they couldnt even be measured on the same scale.

Does anyone even care about college football right now? The normally good teams stink, or seem to be good until the championship game. College football normally sucks out loud anyway.

We're not talking about playing for your country against a team that doesn't see you ever beating it in a million years. Oklahoma knows Missouri can win, and Oklahoma also knows how to win championships...it's what we do. But Missouri's never been there.

I would also say that in America, Olympic hockey is well below any big moment you'll see in college football, especially where college football is king. Don't buy into the 1980 Olympic hockey team myth here. That game was not even a medal game, it wasn't given prime television coverage, and no championship was on the line. That game was a big moment in hindsight, only being huge after the US won. Who was geared up for the clash of the titans when USC and Stanford played....uh....nobody. It only was a big thing once Stanford won.

Sooners get it done...mark it down.

Krishna

Sorry, dear. College Football ain't the Olympics. Thanks for watching "Miracle."

No way. Really? I was simply pointing out that "experience" will only get you so far. But thanks for insinuating that my knowledge of sports comes from movies...that was almost laughable. If experience counted for everything, your precious OU wouldn't be sitting at a 10-2 record this year. This is why games are played- because on any given day, it's anyone's ballgame. There are no givens in sports.

Kragthorpe
11-25-2007, 05:43 PM
I agree.

But your sports knowledge should tell you that the Olympic hockey game wasn't any big stage at all, but only became a big story after the US won.

But Oklahoma will continue to be Oklahoma and Missouri will continue to be Missouri. As for OU being 10-2, let's not act like they got beat by anyone besides themselves either. They laid down at Colorado and their QB got knocked out of the game...neither of those have anything to do with experience in championship games. Also, keep in mind that going into the season, if Missouri had been guaranteed going 10-2, they'd have taken it in a second. OU would have called for their coaches to be fired. The difference is that Missouri is hoping to win a championship and Oklahoma is expecting to win one. Just like the prior 5 they've won in the last 8 years. Missouri simply doesn't belong in the conversation about the game's big programs, and they know it. They've merely benefitted from a turd of a college football season.

Krishna

And this is why experience means jacks*@!t in the longrun. As an athlete, I never cared how I got to the top so long as I got there. It didnt matter if someone rolled over and played dead on the field. What mattered was that I was able to capitalize on the chance.

At some point you also have to acknowledge the possibility that the tides might turn. I'm in no way suggesting that OU is going to lose their status as a great team following this season. It happens though. Former "greats" slump, and newcomers start building their credibility. It's the great dynastic cycle of things.

Kragthorpe
11-25-2007, 07:26 PM
A single great year by Missouri does not prompt a tide to turn. OU had 5 poor years in the 90s...and THAT wasn't enough to turn any tide. No tides are turning here. Missouri got a good QB and turned some players that no one wanted into better players. But again...I'll congratulate them on any championship they may win in advance. But they're still Missouri and Oklahoma is still Oklahoma.

Daniel vs Bradford. It's obvious that OU is complete shit without their freshman QB. If that "team" was half a great as you say they are, there would have been enough experience to win without a freshman. I think you're being a little arrogant. Arrogant? It's hardly arrogant to explain that losing your starting QB is reason to take a loss. And REALLY? "OU is complete shit without their FRESHMAN QB???" I like to think of it as our FRESHMAN QB is better than your fat Senior QB and we're still knocking on the door of a conference title with a Freshman under center. OU rolls: 37-4.
