I'm a recent graduate looking for a position in the Arts & Culture.
I feel that the most search engines do not have the Arts & Culture field in their categories (they all have Art/Design/ Media but not necessarily in the Arts & Culture). I looked into the websites for Museums and organizations/ institutions and applied by e-mail & some mail but it seems like an almost impossible approach.

Do you have suggestions on which sites I should look into or how to go about furthering my search? Is there an employee agency that specializes in this field?

Hi I don't know how to create a new thread. What's the best graduate degree to get to make money do you think? I know I'm a greedy bastard what can I say. But I've been poor too long and I'm kind of done with this whole poverty thing. As usual I'm torn because I would describe myself as an artist but I don't want to be a starving artist. What do ya'll suggest?

Arts & Culture is a little broad. You may want to be more specific.

misterman, have you considered the financial services field in sales? you do not neccessarily need a degree to make money in that field. you can also go after becoming an accountant too. as for grad degrees i'd say econ, MBA, law school or nursing... those i am not sure if it would suit your qualifications and tastes...

I guess I should've been more specific than Arts & Culture.
My background is in a combination of Fine Art, Art history and Arts Administration. I have previously interned at Contemporary Art Galleries and Art Museums. Yes, I have considered going to local meetings to network but it never really seemed to work rather than mingling.

The job market in liberal arts is tough since there are so many applicants but the hiring pool is so small

If you're looking for a musuem job, you might want to look at your state's civil service postings to see if you can find any posting notices for state-owned musuems.

For instance, I live in Pennsylvania and every once in a while I look through the postings on PA's civil service websitefor jobs that sound interesting to me. From time to time I see posting notices for the state musuem in Harrisburg. I believe that my state also runs musuems at several areas of historic interest around the state, such as the Fort Pitt Musuem in Pittsburgh.

I'm not sure how easy it would be to actually secure such a job, though. For PA state civil service jobs, you have to take an exam before you would even be considered for an interview. The exams are only offered at certain times. Also, I have heard many people voice the belief that you have to know somebody to get hired at most state jobs. Its worth a shot, though.

My sister helps run a gallery in a small artisan community in the Hudson Valley of NYS. It doesn't pay much at all and she has to pay her own health insurance, but she loves it. Luckily her area has a somewhat lower cost of living, so the health insurance is more affordable. She also has a roommate. Would you consider something this route? I think she found out about the job because she used to waitress in one of the restaurants in the community.

P.S. I think she is going to see if her boss will pay at least part of her health insurance this year as a bargaining tool for her to stay/not get more of a pay raise.

The website for the American Association for Museums, I think that is right, has a page for job openings. It is the AMA or AAM, some combination of that. Good Luck!

As an aside I am the only one here that feels that Jenna Jameson and Tera Patrick both work int he field of Art & Culture?

How about opening your own niche gallery? There's a multitude of artists looking to sell work, and you could make a decent profit if you can get the sales. Being an entrepaneur (sp) is hard work, but might be nice to work for yourself.

Have you gone directly to websites of museums you might like to work for and browsed their job postings? You could try volunteering for a museum, that would get your foot in the door to network and if they had an opening you would be known over some other random candidate.
