Hi,

Some of you may remember me as I have posted here before but only once or twice. I was rather vague in my previous posts as to what exactly was going on in my work environment so allow me to give a brief refresher..

For the past 3 years I have been working at a race track as a Registrar. This job is seasonal and is not something I hope to make a "career." I just do it for fun and the extra cash. I don't know why I am making a big deal out of quitting this job. I guess it's because the money is nice and some of the people are somewhat decent and make going to work enjoyable.

When I began this job I trained under the former Registrar, let's call her Betty. Betty is the Ticket Manager and is a full-time employee. Overall Betty was a nice person but as time went on she would make rude comments and behave inappropriately. By this I mean, she would say "Hi" in a very snobby way; spread gossip-- turn co-workers against each other; and tell lies about people to the management to prevent them from being promoted. I never gave into her gossip, heck I never gave her the time of day to listen to it and I guess that bothered her because she tagged me early on as "odd" behind my back. Little does she know I heard it..but I took the high road by treating her with respect and trying to make the workplace friendly.

A few months ago as the season drew to a close, my boss asked me to make some suggestions for next year and I did. One of the suggestions was to set up a code of conduct for all Registrar's from various sanctioning bodies that come to our facility. I told her that a few of them behave in ways that are not conducive to our facility and are disrespectful. I know that Betty heard this because she was present in the meeting. She probably felt defensive because her friends are volunteer Registrar's and are mainly the ones spreading the gossip; drinking on the job; etc.. All I have so say is, if the shoe fits.. wear it.

During my 3 years at this track I have never received a promotion or a pay increase which is quite a disappointment. I put up with a lot, and they know it but they obviously don't value me. At my other job, I am a Psychiatric Technician and was hired also, as an Insurance Biller. They're always talking about letting me do new things and it pays well. I would like to focus more on that..

I guess my main deal is I am sick of the drama; the dead end future there and the poor pay which is why I want to move on. I plan on sending my boss an email informing her that she should anticipate a letter of resignation in the coming days but I'm afraid I don't have the courage to do it. It's like this place has a hold on me and I hate it.

Anyone blame me for wanting to leave? I told them in October that I would be back next season but heck, things change..

Yep. I think I would probably want to let it go too...unless you really like it for the money or to use it as partime play. If you feel that way and would want to go back, I wouldn't burn any bridges. Just talk to the boss lady and explain that it is time you wanted to put your focus on your primary career and are ready to advance in those areas. But, express that you have enjoyed your time there and would be interested in helping next season if possible. Something like that. I would definatly do it face to fact and give a notice.

3 years is a long time. And most certainly too long to go without a raise! They must be crazy!

Go for it honey! The world is yours, and you shouldn't feel bad for putting in your notice AT ALL! And, if they do not understand...that is silly and is no fault of yours.

You can do it and good luck :)

I appreciate the response.

When should I send in my letter of resignation? They usually call me in to do an hours worth of work around now. And by work I mean go down to a freezing cold basement and count tons and tons of wristbands.

Why not do it now? Will it really be worth it to get an hour or so worth of pay for freezing your arse off and being miserable miserable? I'll have to let you make that decision, as maybe you would like the money. . .

You don't owe them anything though. . . yes, you said you'd come back, but you're not bound to stay. We have employees say that they will come back next year for seasonal work, but if something comes up in the off-season, no big deal.

Your rationale seems completely understandable, and if this is something you want to do. . . go for it!!! Quit!!!
