View Full Version : Sinking ship

I am on a sinking ship, and if I don't get off soon, I am going down with it. Every day I walk into work, someone has either been fired or is quiting. It is scary, and I am super paranoid. Not to mention that I don't get along with my boss at all. I got screwed over about 3 months ago when the a co-worker of mine was let go, which caused her position to become open. I should have been next in line for this position, but a younger, less experienced girl, who has been with the agency alot less time than me, got it instead. Now she is making more $ than me, which is totally unfair. Needless to say, I mentally checked out of my job at that time, but I am still here and actively looking for something else. My boss has told us not to worry with all the firings going on, that we would know it if it was coming (ie, been on an improvement plan, or had to of done something horrible that would warrant a firing). I still worry though because my position is so undefined. This afternoon my boss emailed me to make sure I save everything I work on to 'My Documents' in case 'God forbid you get hit by a bus' word for word. Who the F says that? Gosh, I will LOSE it if I come in here tomorrow and I am let go. This is basically just a rant, not sure what I am looking for people to say. Thanks for reading.

Just keep looking for a new job! That is all you can do. Stressing about it wont do any good. You already want to leave so just keep looking as best you can and prepare for the worst. But hopefully, nothing will happen!
Definitely agree - and I would also make sure NOT to save anything, but that's just me.

The job is sucking my spirit out of me. I saw my old boss recently and she could tell how sad I looked. Isn't that sad? I am so stressed and being here is totally taking a toll on me. I should/could be doing SO much more. I have a freaking college degree and work experience and no one takes advantage of my willingness to learn and participate. It's like they don't want to see me succeed here. I have already been promoted from within once. Now, I just sit here, sometimes bored to almost tears. What happened to me?
I understand dreams. I'm in the same situation. After you've been sitting around awhile, you start to question the abilities you brought to the job when you were enthusiastic. It's tough on the self confidence when you're out and looking again. Geez, I almost feel like someone coming out of a bruised relationship.

I have a degree, diploma and certificate and work in an administrational position. It's annoying - as some people tend to assume that I'm uneducated and dumb!
In relation to your position....it's not you...it's the job and the company you're in! Really if the company can't retain staff.... I'd start wondering why!? Perhaps your manager just has TERRIBLE, pathetic managerial skills and really has no idea how to deal with staff. I think I've been where you are! Keep your head up! It's not you...it's the job! It sounds unhealthy being there! Mentally and physically.
I often wonder why...there are SO many managers have NO people skills!? Then you see workers....at the bottom of the pecking order...who'd make WAY better managers! We live in an unfair world!
 I guess to such miserable types....the only thing in their world is their cubicle and their office....but you're better than that...and know that there's so much more to life outside! :p

Sometimes the problem is the workers. At my job, that's the real problem. I love my coworkers, but they ask too much of a startup. We have no health insurance, no Direct Deposit, no benefits at all. I'm used to that, so it doesn't really matter to me.
But my coworkers are upset at the low pay, lack of benefits, the chaos our logistics are in, etc. I feel part of the problem is managerial incompetence, but we've had some bad breaks too. I really want to give these people the benefit of a doubt, you know?

I've said this before, but I think it's because corporate america typically promotes people to manager based on the fact that they are good at a specific task, rather than if they are good leaders. Just because you are the best widget turner in the shop and have done that for 8 years, doesn't mean you'd be good at leading other widget turners.

All I know is that I will feel a lot better at 4:30 today. A temporary relief from the weight on my shoulders will be lifted only to come down again at 8:30 Monday morning.
