Last week at work I was practically given a new job on a plate, with a 50% pay rise. 50%! I was very excited – a far higher salary than I imagined being on at my age. Nevertheless, I wanted to consider it over the weekend to make sure I was making the right decision. Its a Project Management job, which will be hard work and a learning curve (I’ve done a little bit in the past but not a significant amount). And then….unbelievably…when I met with the boss today to accept and discuss the finer details, she said she was really sorry but H.R. had decided to veto the pay rise and could only offer me 5% as my degree was Geography and the job spec states it required a Science degree (the person I would be replacing managed fine without one!).
So now what do I do? Stick in my current job where I am comfortable and stress-free or take the opportunity to progress to something I’m not sure if I will enjoy, with a distinctly average pay rise, in the knowledge that the workload is worthy of a much larger salary on the job spec and also in the knowledge that if I don’t take it, they will probably be more than accommodating to a consultant (with science degree) charging £100 per hour – whether or not they could do the job that much better than me or not is questionable…

Screw that - sounds shady. If they would bring someone else in from outside at 50% more than you make, it sounds like they are trying to short change you. I'd decline the offer myself.
