My situation: I've been searching for work for about 6 months now. I just had an interview with the place that I would consider my ideal entry level dream job and it would be my first choice under any circumstances probably. I did well in the interview and I feel I have a reasonable chance at landing the job. The only problem is the hiring process is long and it will be about 2 months before I hear back with an official offer or rejection notice. Now, assuming the worst but hoping for the best I am still applying to jobs and have some interviews next week. I'm sure these places will want me to start rather soon before I hear back from my first place. So I don't really know what to tell these other places. I don't want to start working at one place and then hear back from the other place with a job offer because I would leave in a heartbeat (and I feel bad doing so). So any suggestions on what I should do? Is it bad to start somewhere and then leave soon after? Should I cancel the interviews? (even though it's not guaranteed I will get these others jobs either.)

Also, I've been stringing together part-time/freelance work to make money and that will end in about two weeks and I don't really have anything lined up. So I will be in need for some $$$ too which adds to the situation.

If you really want the job - you can always call them up after a few days after the interview and ask where they're at in selecting the candidate!

I bet, some companies like to hire 'keen' eager beavers! Then if they call you back to let you know - you can drop a hint that your eager to get into it.

Or, alternatively - you can um and ah over whether you are going to accept a position...take your time....if the company is really sincere..and they REALLY want you - they ought to be ok with you setting the start date being within a month or 2 weeks or something like that.

All you can be totally HONEST about it and that you need time!

It's always good to send a thank you card to the people you interviewed with if you haven't already. It sets you apart. I'd definitely follow up too once in awhile just to make sure they know you're still interested.

Here's the way I look at your situation. You can't live your life on an unknown. I'd take a job thinking you might not get the one you want. Consider that a company isn't going to have much loyalty to you, and would lay you off if business went bad without a heartbeat. I don't think you should feel bad if the right opportunity comes along after a month and you decide to move jobs.
