Hey all,
I've tried everything, monster , careerbuilder, the newspaper, networking, and interning and I still can't find a job in communications. Does anyone know of any headhunter companies? I mean the companies that just send you on interviews. Not the ones who make you take typing tests and meet with them to waste your time. I live in North Jersey if anyone knows of companies in or around the area I would really appreicate it:)

I found your problem. You are looking for employment in a nonexistent field. Try looking in existent fields, like purchasing, production, maintenance, or custodial.

To use your analogy, a headhunter would be someone who looks for someone that someone else is looking for. Boba Fett (headhunter) tracked down Luke Skywalker because Vader was looking for him. In your case, Vader (employers) doesn't want to talk to you (Luke), so a headhunter does not enter the equation.

Hmmmm, how long have you been looking? Can you be more specific about the particular position you are looking for? Public Relations firm, outreach for a nonprofit, sales, etc. Try www.spherion.com. How far outside NYC are you?

I'm looking for jobs specifically in the public relations or marketing field. I'm about 45 minutes away from midtown NYC. Thank you for your advice:)

I know that NBC has operations in Engelwood Cliffs (or something like that). Dow Jones has some offices in Princeton, which I know is South Jersey, but still Jersey. I'd say set your sights on NYC mostly, though. There are boatloads of those jobs there. If you are living at home, you may want to start out as an intern somewhere first, to get a foot in the door. Look for PA positions, but stay away from being an admin. Viacom hires a lot of young people if you don't mind not having benefits. Check out Cablevision, too, and sign up for the email blasts from cynopsis.com and b&c. Also look around Mandy.com and Variety.com.
EDIT: Okay, i see you were not looking at media specifically. Then your options are even greater. But those are some good companies to start with.
I have seen a fair number of postings for ad execs at ABC and similar. I have heard of "headhunter" types that are more like employment consultants, but you have to pay for their services. They basically help you market yourself, and you use their network of past customers (job seekers they successfully helped) to find work. Communications is a touchy industry. Alot of people start out by working for pennies or nothing, simply because competition is so keen.
