Like a fool, I turned my phone off this afternoon. It just so happened that when it was turned off, someone from HR called me from one of the interviews I went to last Thursday and left a message. She didn't say if the news was good or not, but she said she wanted to "follow up" with me on the interview. I don't know what this means, so I am incredibly nervous right now. What is your take on this?

You'll just need to call her back to find out or, wait for her call and live with the suspense.

"follow up" might mean feedback for why you were or weren't the successful applicant....then again a reponse from them is better than no response.

Good luck either way. :surprised

The thing is...I felt really good after that interview. Everyone seemed to like me and my skill set, so I really didn't see a real reason why I would be rejected. This phone call is rather interesting...

Call back, and call back early in the day! I hope you get some positive news.

So here's the deal...I indeed got a 'yes', which is the news I have been waiting for so long for. The base salary is about the minimum that I would accept (although still $5k higher than what I have now, and would probably bring me to the point where I can probably safely afford a small condo in the Boston burbs). I was able to negotiate a 5k sign on bonus as well. The atmosphere is more laid back, the people are very nice, there is room for advancement and it's a much shorter commute. The only thing is that there are still a couple of interviews I am waiting results for, including one from R. I. (which I would prefer) and one from Chicago, which I have yet to make the trip to. Frankly, I really don't know if I want to go to Chigo. anymore, especially given what happened today. But the R. I. position seems to be very appealing, and I actually would probably prefer that if I had a choice. Not to mention the fact that I have a phone i-view this afternoon.

Advice would be welcome.

But it's all good! I finally see the light!

Congratulations! How long do you have to give them an answer?

Friday (although she seemed flexible). The problem is that the other place will not be done with their interviews until Friday, and I have another interview Friday.

I don't know, you could always take the job and then if another one comes through that is better, take that one. I know it sounds like a shady thing to do, but you really do have to look out for number one. I did a similar thing where I took a job and left after 2 months because I got a better offer. The company I was with for the 2 months understood and even tried to counter-offer.

Or you could be honest with them and tell them that you are waiting to hear back from another company and want to make the best choice for you career. Let them know that you are very interested but just want to make a good decision and you need to extend the decision deadline. That happens all the time at the place I work at.

I second!

And I third! Companies know that in the first 3 months of being in a new job, you could very well be still waiting for a better offer. It is understandable.

I am flying to Chicago Friday morning...I really don't know if I want to move out there, but I guess I'll give it a shot...I have nothing to lose.

So one of five things could happen:

1) I take this job, which would be OK, although it would mean I would get out of cat modeling, which I actually enjoyed outside of the constant spreadsheet cleaning.

2) I get the Chigo. job, and they knock my socks off with an offer...then I will really have to consider that job.

3) I get the R. I. job (best option for me), and I move down there (but close enough that Boston is a hop skip and jump from me).

4) My current company counteroffers after I give them my resignation letter, and it is sufficient in terms of salary and responsibilities that I would consider staying.

5) I get a face-to-face with a phone interview I had today, and they accept me.

if this happens i would strongly urge you to be strong and walk away - if you have to quit to get a raise/promotion/change of job then think about the future and how you would continue moving/growing aas an employee.

focus on the other 4 options - staying is not viable of you have another offer that is more intriguing.

If they change my responsibilities, that is a different story.

Frankly, I really am having second thoughts about accepting this...I really think I can do salary-wise somewhere else. I'm probably still going to be below the average for my peer group, and it's probably below the industry standard, and that's what bothers me the most. I just want what I think is fair, really...that's all it comes down to.

If they change my responsibilities, that is a different story.

regardless of what they promise i think it would most likely be a bad idea to stay.

if i have followed your story correctly you have tried several times to get a plan in place to allow you to do new things/grow as an ee - and you have been rebuffed, or they have dragged their feet in getting something done.

if you have to threaten to leave to get this process going, what happenes if they don't deliver on whatever promise they make you - you have no leverage. and then you start the process of looking for a job all over again.

try not to do anything rash - to me me leaving your current er is most likely the correct course of action assuming that you are going to a better deal.
