Any accountants out there that can tell me a little about the job? What is your day like? Pay? Is there a lot of interaction with others? I have always worked in customer service and I am sooo incredibly sick of dealing with people all day every day. I am good at numbers and like to work alone. The occassional interaction with people is just fine but I hate when that it is all I do!

Also, I have a BA in Management-Marketing so should I go back and get a second Bachelors in Accounting? Or would just an Associates be enough? I am interested in working for a large corporation as a financial accountant. Definitely not tax and not a CPA.

Thanks for any help!

My uncle is an accountant and from what I've heard from him, it would be best to have a masters in accounting for a job. I would imagine that you would have basic accounting courses for a ba in management and marketing. You might have to take a few prequisites before going to graduate school, but it would be best if you're going to bother going back to school at all.

I'm an accounting major, but not a CPA, so I don't have an actual accounting job (IIRC, even private sector staff accountants are preferred to have CPA's by their employers). My position is a Financial Analyst; it's still somewhat entry level, but I get decent salary increases every year (the main reason they've gotten me to stay). My job entails mostly working with Excel spreadsheets and Access databases to produce monthly and ad hoc reports, so it involves programming more than anything else, but it still utilizes at least a basic knowledge of financial information. For this job in particular, a bachelor's in either Finance or Accounting would be required. If you get an Associates in Accounting, you may be able to get a job as a Bookkeeper, but the pay isn't nearly as good.

Just remember spreadsheets can be even more tedious than cranky customers.

Ain't that the truth. At least customers respond when you ask them "wtf is your problem" lol :D

I'm an accountant and currently getting my masters. I would suggest if you go back to get your masters and you may have to take some accounting classes before you can start a masters of accounting program. I know thats how it is with my program. If you like numbers and not working with people then tax is your best bet but keep in mind you will still have to work in groups and have client contact no matter what type of accounting job you have. Also with a CPA license you will make a lot more money and get more job offers than those who don't have it so just something to keep in mind. Hope that helps!

I am a staff accountant for hotel (not my place of choice but thats an other story). I was a finance major and did insurance for a while and then resturant management. Mainy, I do the daily audit so mostly working with Excel spreadsheets. A couple month end reports and what ever else they feel like giving me ( and that is not alot). I do some payables, and rebates/refunds.
Rather be a Financial Analyst but in Chicago thats hard to come by. Like even one said masters in accounting or a MBA with an accounting focusis the way to go. You do not have to get your CPA most employers are wanting to know if you can sit for the exam.

Thanks for all the info. I am not sure what to do. I definitely don't want to do tax. I worked at E&Y for a year in their tax dept and was traumatized. LOL. So I may be looking at Library Science. Although I think there is more client interaction. Ugh, I don't know what to do!

What did you do at EY? You said that you a BA in Management-Marketing. EY is a great place to work from what I hear. And they have Your Master Plan in which you earn your master in accounting while you work regardless of what your BA is. I wish I could get in there
