A couple of weeks ago I contacted a lady I used to work with at a previous job. Currently she is working as the Director of Guest Services at a local non-profit theatre company. We decide to meet up for coffee.
She offered me a part-time position as a Guest services representative. The job requires someone who is an independent learner, outgoing, enthuasiastic, self-motivated and very willling to learn all facets of the guest services department (i.e. rentals, box office, front-of-house etc). Also, she mentioned many opportunities to learn new skills (management/supervisory), opportunity to learn about the arts/culture scence and possibility of advancement (a couple of her co-workers are going on Mat. leave so their positions may open up for internal applicants)
Now here is the down side....
The job is part-time at approximately 15 hrs/week and it pays $10.00/hr (horrible). She did promise that the hours could increase over time and the wage would increase as responsibilities increases. Because it is non-profit they rely alot on corporate donations and endowements, which have been low this due to the recession.
The theatre seasons is usually very busy during the spring, but quiets down in the summer. While the rentals do pick-up in the summer time and is busy throughout the year. So I know their will be a plenty & variety of work to do.
Also, I was planning on leaving abroad for 6months to 1 year to Australia. I have saved up alot of money in the last 3 years, have no outstanding debts, and could safely leave right away. I have already started stage #1 of obtaining my Visa.
My Australian cousin mentioned that the job market is horrible and that she was 'lucky' enough to find work as an Accounting Assitant right after graduating college with a Education degree. My hope is that my exprience with the theatre company may open up a few more doors work-wise in Australia. I can't imagine myself flying all the way to Australia to wait tables, serve coffee, or do some sort of minding numbing entry level Admin job (all jobs that I can easily acquire here in my home town). Also, my cousin mentioned that she wants to move out out of the her parent's house in the suburbs and into the city. So, I definetly have to rolling in enough cash to cover rent and still have lots of fun!
Right now, I am working part-time as a Retail Sales Associate and part-time as a ESL Youth Facilitator at non-profit agency aiding immigrant/refugee youth. I enjoy my job as a Y.F., but really want to get out retail as I have been working in retail jobs since I was 16. I should mention that I just graduated with a B.A. in Sociology.
I could use some advice with this.
