My cousin recently introduced me to Depeche Mode. I have become completely hooked on their music. Anyone else a Depeche Mode fan? Any other bands that would recommend with a similar musical style?

WOW! I love so many of the artists you like :) Why do you dislike Trent Reznor? He comes across so brilliant and intelligent in his interviews not to mention he is gorgeous. Haha. NIN has some amazing stuff...

Heh, I edited that post...so you'll have to compare the versions.
I need to recommend a few more, and those are Peter Murphy, Jesus and Mary Chain, Placebo and Android Lust. I've seen Android Lust twice. (Soooooo good.)
As for NIN, they're def. not my favorite of all of them. I wish Coil had been more famous. But most rock stars have egos...I kinda love to hate a lot of them, like Manson, Billy Corgan, etc. ;): So don't mind me, it doesn't mean anything. Glad you dig the tunes. What are your faves from my list?

First Im impressed that Bauhaus is on your list, NO ONE knows who they are! I saw them in concert in 2005, AMAZING!! Peter Murphy did some of his solo tunes.
Love and Rockets are also great, and influenced by Peter Murphy and Bauhaus.
Anyways.....Ive been into Depeche Mode since 1994. They are on tour this year with their new album (Mysterious is the first single heard it on XM over the weekend and its like their old stuff before Dave Gahan got off Heroine)
They will be here the weekend of my Bday.....tickets are on sale next week and Im going for FRONT row!!!

Yeah I like Depeche Mode. I actually saw them at MSG during the Exciter tour. This time around I don't think I will see them though. Tickets are too expensive. Other groups I kind of link of with them are New Order and Erasure.

How expensive were the tix? Last time they were around here (same tour) good seats were close to $100 with fees, bad seats were close to $45.

For MSG, the tickets are 49.50, 74.50, 94.50 and 129.50. My sister and I were on the floor and this was years back but I can't imagine the tickets were more than 80 (don't know what I was thinking buying at that price then either).

Yup.....considering Ive never seen them on tour, missed the last one due to stupidity (not looking at the tour page) Im NOT missing out on this one.
Been having luck with getting amazing seats lately, so fingers crossed for seats at the outdoor venue they're playing!

Where would you watch them? I didn't even know they were touring until I saw your other post. Good luck with the tix!

They're going to be all over the country. Here is the link to their tour dates page...starts with their Europe Leg, scroll down and it lists US cities, dates tix go on sale and through what company. Thankfully here its Live Nation and not Rapemaster.

So happy to see this thread!!
Ive been a huge fan since 1990 or so- I remember waiting for the Enjoy the Silence video to come on MTV back then. In 1994 I BEGGED my parents to let me go to the SOFAD tour as it stopped in Vegas- but the show was canceled and the resched was for the night before my AP History exam (yeah- parents didnt go for that one). I missed that tour, then switched over to being a bigger Pet Shop Boys fan for a good decade and am now back to favoring DM over all others. After 16 years I was finally able to see them live in 2006 at Stockholm Stadion- it was an exceptional concert. Im hoping to catch plenty of shows this year, but more likely later in the fall unless I can swing Vilnius yet (potential of back stage passes there!) at the end of May.
I thought the first single was Wrong? Great video and catchy tune- its up on YouTube.
This all being said I sure wish Alan Wilder would come back, but thats never going to happen. I think their sound today misses a lot of his input while his solo stuff misses a lot of theirs. No surprise then that my favorite stuff is all from his era!
You can link Depeche Mode to Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark (OMD)- whose style in the late 70s influenced DM (and OMD opened for them on one of the tours in the late 80s). They recently reformed and have been playing small shows in the UK (DYING to see them live)- if you are of a certain age you would know their song If You Leave from the Pretty in Pink soundtrack. Pet Shop Boys are another group typically lumped in there- more intelligent lyrics and they have openly stated that they were influenced by DM when writing their album Behavior- also back in 1990.
Alan Wilder's solo project is called Recoil- he comes out with stuff every once in a blue moon. Some of it is good, some of it sounds too much like Orbital, and some of it sounds like Moby before Moby.

Who doesn't love the songs Personal Jesus and Enjoy the silence? I think the band was spectacular during the period of 1986-1993. Unfortunately for them, they failed to remain relevant.
David Gahan is an amazing frontman. His performances have alot of energy and I think that sets him apart from silimar bands like New Order. I love New Order but Bernard Sumner isn't much of a show man. Peter Hook is awesome though!

See- Wilder left in '95 and first made some of the more "important" contributions in the mid 80s- around 1986 (Black Celebration- one of my most favorite albums). When he left he took a piece of their sound with him, and it hasnt been the same since.
Agree about Gahan's showmanship. Seriously- you go to a show and you feel like hes putting his whole being into belting out those songs and the crowd just goes along with him waving arms (Never Let Me Down) or singing refrains. Its really quite an experience- though Im a person who enjoys being jostled by large, exuberant crowds at concerts!
New Order are alright, but I find them kinda dull as Bernard Sumner's song writing drives me round the bend. I liked the first Electronic album (unsurprisingly they opened for DM in '90) but not subsequent releases.
I guess if you are talking about these groups then you need to include Yaz/Yazoo and Erasure though Im not as fond of those two either and Joy Division, which I enjoy more. In some ways its kinda fun how incestuous the early 80s British bands were- but of course everything in the electronic universe relates back to Kraftwerk. :P

Both songs are brilliant. Alot of people did not enjoy Marylin Manson's cover of Personal Jesus. I thought it was great...but, I find he forces his voice a bit too much. Nevertheless it is a great cover of an awesome DM song.

New Order's music always puts me in a good mood. Really good dance/work out music. Never really looked for lyrical quality in their music.

Had a high school BF who was really into cranking "Personal Jesus" with the t-tops off in his Trans Am back in '94. Other than that, no particular interest.

All this talk about new wave music and noone brings up INXS?!
To me they are up there with the greatest new wave/alt rock groups. It's a shame hutchence died...another superior frontman. I did think JD Fortune was handling himself well given that he was stepping into some enormous shoes, but guess he got coked out.
Fortune is a good singer nonetheless...I thought his song Afterglow was a good tribute to Hutchence and a song with all the right elements to stand the test of time.

I always think of INXS as the poor man's U2. My boyfriend always gets snarky with me about that, although he's actually as big a U2 fan as I am.

I love U2 but I don't think INXS is a poor man's version of U2. Other than belonging to different levels of stardom, they have very different musical styles.
U2 likes to innovate and stay with current trends while INXS more or less stuck to their new age electro pop-rock ways over their 2 decade career (and counting).
I think Depeche Mode is more the poor man's U2.

Have you heard the new U2 album? I'm loving it, with the exception of one track.

It's a great album. More serious and dark than the last few albums...it reminds me alot of their achtung days.
I think they've done a good job of melding sounds that the newer generation of listeners would appreciate with the classic sounds of U2.
I think my fave tracks on the album are "Breathe" followed by "No Line on the Horizon".

I didn't really care for INXS, except for Welcome to Wherever You Are. Things just seem to click on that album where their other stuff doesn't. I don't see much of any comparison between them and U2.
I've got No Line on the Horizon and I like it (I'd give it a 4-4.5 out of 5). It's better than ... Atomic Bomb, but not as good as Everything You Can't Leave Behind. It is much more aural than their previous work, with the sound conveying the feeling, but there's a lack of songs that stand up well outside the album; there isn't a "Beautiful Day," "Vertigo," "One," etc. "Get on Your Boots" works great inside the album, but doesn't make a very good single, and that's kind of how much of the album is, and that's the main reason I don't think it's as good as ... Leave Behind. "No Line on the Horizon" is my favorite track right now, but "Magnificent" is also up there.
I don't think I was ever a Depeche Mode fan, but Violator is an incredible album. I stopped listening to them after Songs of Faith and Devotion. I kind of didn't realize they were even still around. (I also remember my mom once looking at it and saying, "What is this? Dee-pee-chee Mo-dee?")

One more U2 post to resopnd, and then I'll leave the thread back to Depeche Mode.
The only song I really don't like on the album is "Get on Your Boots," though I see (sort of) why they released it as a single. But I don't think it's representative of the album, it seems like something dropped in there as, "Well, you need something that might be considered radio-friendly." My pick for single would probably have been the title track.
The rest is varying degrees of great, though, and three or four tracks fantastic. Right now, I'm liking the first half of the album better than the second. To me, Maginificent is really, really, really reminiscent of very early U2, sonically, which I like. I also really like the vocals on the chorus of "Unknown Caller," and think it's a really interesting song, but I know a lot of people think the tech imagery is too cheesy, and will quickly sound dated. It gets in my head, though. Right now, though, my favorite song on the album is definitely "Moment of Surrender."
I haven't decided yet if I like it better than "All that you Can't....," because I LOVED that album, overall. But definitely more than "...Atomic Bomb."
