just wondering whether there are any science ppl around here?
What do you mean a "science person"? If you mean science grads, then count me in.

yeah me too...I was a chem major...good jobs to fall back on if your dreams are a bit too dreamy for real life...makes for a great safety net, just don't forget to try and walk the tightrope...

do u think the whole career thing is a bit different for science grads?
for some reason, i don't see it as being like a normal job.

Microbiology & Immunology on my part, never found a decent job in the field with "only" a B.Sc, so I got a job in computers instead.

that's a big switch, to go to computers.
i guess heaps of ppl never use what they learn at uni in their ultimate careers. seems like a waste but that's the way of the world.

Well, putting the emphasis on B. Science rather than Microbiology does help. It's not as scary (as long as they don't ask for my major / minor)
Although it might seem like a waste, I've often been told that a university degree is just proof that you can learn.
Ok, so far we've seen Chemistry, Microbiology... who else is out there?

intially I was working with computers as well although i was unsing my analytical chem background doing forensic analysis of manufacturing defects...kinda like CSI but on microchips and printed circuit boards...didn't mind the job (kinda fun being an investigator) but I had problems with the work atmosphere and the corporate irresponsibility and lack of pride, unity, support, etc., from management...they always wanted me to work either above or below people...I only wanted to work WITH people...when economy burst our disposability was exposed and we were sold down the river...lately I have been playing around with some new ventures...right now I am piecing together a catering company (chemistry in the kitchen) that specializes in catering gourmet fast food to crowds at sports and music festivals (multi-ethnic cross-cultural vegan-based fusion noodle and rice bowl dishes)...we are currently in the running for dates on the Vans Warped Tour as well as Coachella Festival...in addition to serving the masses we are gonna try and shoot a documentary about small business start-ups associated with 20something lifestyles...looking for a team to travel across the country with and make the dream a reality if you know of anyone who might be interested...

I have a degree in Zoology. I did research at Ohio State during school and for a couple years after. But, I got sick of making almost nothing and moved to a career in my second love, computers. Now, I'm a computer programmer.
But, if I could make the same money (or close to it) in research (without having to go to 8 more years of school) as I do in computers...I'd rather be back in the lab running gels and growing viruses and stuff....if I ever win the lottery, I'd get a part-time job in a lab somewhere.

really? still work in the lab even if u won the lottery? i'd go on a round the world trip and never come back.

yeah, i guess ppl in science tend to b i bit nicer and less adversarial. i know that's a sweeping generalisation, there are exceptions to the rule.
i think i'd get eaten alive if i were a stockbroker or real estate agent.
