.......argh, I just wanted to vent.

Found out today that because of a national redesign, my job next year is a) likely to take a completely different, much less desireable form and b) is only 25% chance of being retained all together......

The silly thing? I love my job. The place I work at loves me. I do AMAZING work. My clients think I do great work........and yet it's getting ripped away because of government funding.........

sigh....

end of rant..........

It's unfortunate. I have seen quite a few companies that provide the same services I do to a very specific population, fold for the same reasons. Also here in New York State (probably the same everywhere!), there is so much bureacracy and it takes forever for the "funding" to come in, that a lot of smaller companies just can't hold out very long. Where I work, it's a huge company throughout several states, so they throw money from the other programs into our program to keep us afloat until the money for our services comes in months and months and.................sometimes months more down the road.

It sucks because already disadvantaged people continue to suffer and there's just lack of resources in general out there to help people overall these days.

It just drives me mad. I'm an early intervention school retention specialist dealing with kids with severe barriers. I work in one of the lowest socio-economic areas in the country. 80% don't go on to ANY college...and thats of those that made 12th grade.......and what are they doing? Pulling early retention from our region.........if it were just me being replaced with another worker, fine. But this is.......grrrrrrrrrr..

Yes,

I know what you mean. My heart is in public service, and I love it! But one drawback for working in the government or for non-profits is eveything is funding -based. The positions, the resources, the positions...It can be maddening, and I'm making a note to research how to avoid the "no funding, too much funding" rollercoaster of public service work.

This is another huge reason why many people who do human services work, teaching, etc. are often quite over-worked and underpaid. I know when I worked in non-profits it was often like this. I work for a for-profit now and even though there are times when I have to take on more than my fair share of work, I feel that I am at least compensated fairly for it.

It also says a lot about a nation's value of "certain" citizens with these kinds of budget cuts.

Seems like I've seen lots of posts here complaining about non-profits. I'm no different.

Because I work in the Budget Department, I have the luxuary (or maybe it's a curse) of being able to easily discover everyone's salary. It's certainly super-frustrating to hear management tell lower-level staff there is no $ while they're fattening their own wallets.

I mean I'm not naive enough to think that doesn't go on in the for-profit sector, but it's almost expected there. The fake moral superiority of supposedly liberal values and then not putting their $ where their mouth is makes me throw up. Good riddance for only 2 more days.
