View Full Version : Sleeping with TV Survey

Ok, another dumb survey, but I'm really curious about this.
I cannot, CANNOT sleep with the TV on. I can fall asleep for awhile, but I will always wake back up due to the noise and flashing lights. My boyfriend can and will sleep all night with the TV on, full blast (we're a real match as you can see). I have a cousin who can't sleep unless the TV is on, full blast. If you cut it off, she'll wake up due to the silence.
What do you do?

I like to go to sleep with it on, but definitely set the sleep timer. I like that it distracts me while I'm trying to fall asleep, because otherwise I start thinking about work, bills, etc. But I hate to be woken up by it, there's no way I can have it on all night. The downside is, sometimes I end up paying attention to whatever show I've got on instead of falling asleep. Usually I try to watch something on HGTV because that stuff usually doesn't have much of a plot I need to pay attention to.

I have kind of a different problem with a sleep timer.
If I set one for say 30 mins. I lay there waiting for it to turn off. So I usually just wait until I get sleepy and turn the damn thing off. I can't wait for it to go off.

I'm one of those people who can't stand any kind of background noises...can't sleep while the TV is on, couldn't study while there was music playing, etc. Silence is golden!
Oh, and MetFan....that was SO me last night waking up and counting how many hours I had left each time...made me laugh when I read that.

Now if I decide to leave the TV on for awhile, I need something quiet and non-engaging to go to sleep to, like the news or something with quiet dialogue. But my boyfriend falls asleep to loud cartoons and action movies. The flickering lights and music alone are enough to keep me awake.
I wish I could sleep like that.

I would love to sleep with a TV star.
Oh wait - That's not what this is about huh? Oops - my bad.

I can't sleep w/ the TV on unless I'm plain exhausted. I like my silence.

i usually need my silence. if i have the tv on even on the lowest audible volume...i'll strain to listen to what they're saying or the lyrics to a song (hence, no radio while sleeping either). plain ol' silence is golden. except for all the firetrucks and ambulances in the night. i guess i need that now too.

i can sleep with the tv or anything else on. i just mentally tune it out and sleep. my mom says this is possible because when i was a baby she would purposely put me to sleep when the house was extremely noisy. she said she did this so little things like doors opening or people talking wouldn't wake me.

I like silence too. When I fall asleep with the TV on, I end up waking up in the middle of the night thinking the TV is really loud and being annoyed by it.
I don't have a TV in my bedroom but I wish I did for the summer time. My bedroom window faces the woods and the frickin' Cicadas drive me crazy. Those damn things go 24/7. It wasn't as bad last summer of course. Then in the early AM, there are crows that sit right outside my window and crow at each other. It's super annoying. Maybe I would benefit from a TV in my room.

AlFa, I think that's funny that you want the tv to drown out the cicadas. Some people buy the sounds machine just to get that sound. I like having the tv in my room, although I admit that lots of times I don't get enough sleep because I want to stay up to watch something. And there's nothing fun about waking up to the tv in the middle of the night if you forget to set the timer.

Yeah those people are insane! Do you realize how loud those damn things are?! It's not like crickets, I can handle crickets! I cannot drown these things out. Alas, I think they're supposed to be going back underground soon.
This thread reminds me of that song by Barenaked Ladies. I think it's called "What is Sleep"? Good Song!

We have a creek that flows through our apartment complex, so sometimes I feel like we have one of those sound machines because there are a ton of frogs making noise at night. It is kind of nice though, I feel like I'm camping every night.
