when i post on QLC, i spend a lot of time on my posts. to avoid getting caught by my supervisor 'wasting time', i'll type up my post in word, and then cut & paste it into the message window when it's done.
does anyone have any other tips for not getting caught skimming through the QLC message boards?

Hahaha, no. I've gotten in trouble, but I really don't care anymore. I look at QLC posts in between files, so if it keeps me focused on my files, so be it.

Same here- althought they're not sure what it is... Just that I talk too much throughout the day. But if i've gotten everything done, there's nothing they can do about it! That and i don't give a rat's ass anymore.

I have my monitor positioned so that anyone walking by can't see my screen. They never know what I'm working on. Plus it keeps me from door tweaking.

I got a new desk and arranged my stuff in a way that nobody can see my screen but me. Hah.
We also have no internet policy, so if I ever do get busted, I can claim ignorance. And if my work doesn't suffer, I don't feel in the least bit guilty about posting on the clock. My work takes up a TON of my personal life, if anything, they're ripping me off, not the reverse. I make so little, I can justify anything.

Can't you say you are doing research for a story??? ;)

My desk is in a different wing of our office suite. If I hear foot stepts coming down the hall I hurry up and switch my computer screen to my work e-mail account.
*la de da..nothing to see here* :)

I should TOTALLY do a story on either QLC or on messageboard friendships in general, Jen. I've often thought that messageboard, chatroom, etc. friendships are the new pen pals. In fact, I just went to a wedding with a group of 12 people who all met originally due to membership on a messageboard, and are fast friends now, and travel all over the country to visit one another. The bride and groom themselves actually met up orginally via the boards.
But if I wrote a story, then it would give my bosses the heads up..."Wait...why does she know sooooo much about this kind of thing...what does she do with all her time?" They'd be constantly watching me. Heh.

You should do a story like that! So cool!

I've actually thought about freelancing something like that, and pitching it to various magazines...lord knows I've got enough sources I could interview. I just don't think it's something that would appeal to my readership at large...would be kinda wasted on them, and then it would be property of the paper and I COULDN'T pitch it to anyone else.

See, one of the perks of working out of the comfort of my bachelorette pad is that no one sees what I'm doing. :)
And I feel as long as I'm getting all my work done, who cares if I take breaks to peruse and post on QLC?
My editors think I'm a hard enough worker that they gave me my three-month raise a month early, so that's good enough for me. :)
I, too, have thought that the whole concept of online message boards and the friendships that grow from them would be a great story idea. However, it probably wouldn't appeal to a lot of my readers, either, especially because I cover Bedford County-specific topics. Maybe someday I'll pitch it to our Lifestyles department.

I hear ya. This is how I justified stealing the can opener out of the kitchen at my last paper. I needed one, and didn't feel like buying one myself. I also took numerous food items out of the company fridge (I have little scruples when it comes to free food) and when I left, loads and loads of office supplies for my home office.
I guess that's not REALLY in the same category as posting on QLC while you're on the clock, though, huh? ;)

Exactly. Just like it's not a car accident if there's no scratches on MY vehicle.

It's sad when you have more non-work windows open than work ones.

I too am a fan of alt-tab.
Too funny though- last week in a meeting with our boss, he was telling how he needs to take his squeaky shoes in to get fixed (so they won't squeak) and I told him not to, cause I like knowing when he is walking my way....he said, "yeah, so you can switch from the internet to work!" He was laughing about it etc....but I said- EXACTLY!!!!
It's just one of those mutual understandings....I get all my crap done, way ahead of time.

Hah, yeah, people are really convinced of my dedication...but I still don't feel guilty. I am dedicated, I just take time to do stuff for me, too.

This is the beauty of working for a small (small!) paper...I pretty much write about what I want! I figure I can write about any topic in a way that will engage the readers. And if they don't like it? Oh, well, better luck with the next story, maybe you'll like it better!
