I feel lost!! Does anyone else every say that? I have a graduate degree in something that I tried in the "real world" and hated. Now I feel like I have no direction. I work at a place I hate, not because of the people, but the actual job itself. I am working with a career counselor so I feel like there is hope, but I just want to be able to quit and start looking for a new job. I can't because I have a mortgage to pay, but I can't even bear it another day! And then you have to give your two weeks notice and bear it another two weeks! People my age just seem to have no problem quitting a job they hate and worrying about it later, I don't have the nerve. Anyone have some helpful advice?

Find yourself that career counselor. Take some assessment tests. Ask yourself some hardline questions. Don't quit your job until you find a new one (I know all about having a mortgage to pay!). Some folks might not like this advice, but once you give your two weeks, just become worthless. They might release you early. Happened to me a couple of times. I was working in the backorder department of a furniture retailer and after I put in my notice I was basically warming a chair. Why bother getting my ass chewed out for 8 hours per day by pissed off people who don't have their new furniture yet when I'm quitting anyway? Pfft. The let me go a week early. Which was fine. I had a week's vacation between that job and starting my new one.

Thanks Midtwenty!

Thanks for the advice about the career counselor. Our first appt. was yesterday and she gave me some of those assessments to do. I'm really looking forward to it. I'm glad to hear that there is someone out there who thinks like me (waiting to quit one job until you find another). It seems like all of my friends (20 somethings) just up and quit and seem to have no cares in the world while I'm stuck with a mortgage and bills to pay!

People who are really adults know better. As much as I dislike my job, I still have bills to pay.

Good luck! I hope the counselor can help you out!

I remember a Friends episode where they advised Rachel to quit her job to get "the fear." She did and then she didn't find a job. I think that stuck with me (or maybe it was my upbringing - either way). I would NEVER quit a job without another one lined up. It was hard enough to find the job I have while working two menial jobs.
