(i seem to be starting all the threads here, come on, ppl!)

i've got a question for all the musically-inclined QLCers out there. i can't seem to recall any of the cover songs that actually improved on the original. do any exist?

I don't know of any that improved on the original.

I am embarrassed to admit I like Ugly Kid Joe's version of Cat in the Cradle.

I think Adam Duritz' version of Carmelita, which was a Warren Zevon song is amazing. Zevon's was good too, and arguably better, but Duritz version is a song I could listen to forever.

Covers are tough...(and sorry, Jen, I can't put anything of the Bangles' above Simon & Garfunkel, even when S&G is at their lowest key). But there are some where the cover at least does the original justice, if not improve upon it

-Since he sings like a hungover bloodhound with strep throat, most people will say that Tom Waits' many songs, which other people predominantly have made famous (Downtown Train is one), are better sung by others. But I can't help it. I have a weird love for Tom.

-Bran Van 3000's take on Cum On Feel the Noise is fun.

-I have always held that the Fugees' version of Killin' Me Softly is every bit as good as Roberta Flack's.

- You can't knock Van Morrison, but every version I've ever heard of Crazy Love, from Harry Manx to Aaron Neville, rules.

Cheesy confessions:
I like both Jewel's version of John Hiatt's Have a Little Faith in Me, and Uncle Cracker doing Dobie Gray's Drift Away. Shut up, man.

Jimi Hendrix doing All Along the Watchtower.

Some of Dave Matthews covers of the same song are good too. He does it at quite of few shows.

Dave has a cover of John Prines "Angel from Montgomery" is beautiful.

He also did a cover of Johnny Cash "Long Black Veil" My favorite is when he performed it with Emmy Lou Harris.

I can't say it actually improved on the original but Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" is one of the best covers I have ever heard. The video gives it that extra "ooomph" too.

And I must confess that I am a big into punk-ska covers so I am a big fan of covers by GoldFinger, New Found Glory and Me First & the Gimme Gimmes. Check out Reel Big Fish's cover of A-Ha's "Take On Me" and GoldFinger's cover of "More Today Than Yesterday".

I like the cover of "Take On Me" too. And MUCH <3 for the Cash cover of "Hurt."

That No Doubt song...I can't think of how it goes...but it's pretty recent...that's a cover and I like it a lot better than the original.

The two that came racing to mind are Metallica's cover of "Whiskey in the Jar" by Thin Lizzy and Megadeth's cover of "Paranoid." Yes, I know. It's almost sacrilege to like a cover better than Black Sabbath's original, but there it is.

I'll try to think of more later.

I can't believe I forgot U2 doing The Stones' "Paint it Black."

Actually, I like every cover U2 ever did (who am I kidding, I like every song U2 ever did, with the notable exception of most of the Zooropa album and some of Pop).

I mean, a girl could get her ass kicked for saying a fairly new singer did a better job than the original band, who's been around for 40 years! :p

I agree. That's the first version I heard anyway. I was a freshman in HS when the Pumpkins did it...then when I was a senior, the FM 1997 version was big. Weird.

I like the new version of Lady Marmalade, by Christina Aguilera et al, much better than the original, sung by LaBelle, I believe.

Glad to see Knockin on Heaven's Door, Uncle Cracker's Drift Away and Johnny Cash Hurt...

I love Toby Lightman's version of 'Real Love' which is fairly recent... also Joss Stone's Fell in Love w/ a Boy.

And i admit i like Lady Marmalade w/ Christina and company, along w/ the Ataris' Boys of Summer...

I'm a big soundtrack geek, and the soundtrack to the film "I Am Sam" is entirely Beatles covers, done with varying degrees of success. Actually, I'm cool with any cover that doesn't make a mess of a good original...doesn't have to supercede it. On this disc, among the ones I can get behind are:

- Sarah McLachlan - Blackbird
- Ben Folds - Golden Slumbers
- Nick Cave - Let it Be
- The Black Crows - Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds
- Rufus Wainright - Across the Universe

He might not be for everybody but when you talk covers today, you gotta mention Richard Cheese & Lounge Against The Machine. My personal favorites are "Chop Suey", "Last Resort", and "Nookie".
